I was getting a bit fed up with the ugly permalinks that my blog had recently, but the problem I had was all the links to the blog on other sites would then become void, so what was I to do.

But luckily I found a plugin that would help with this, the plugin is called “Permalinks Migration” this handy WordPress plugin will do a 301 permanent redirect when an old link is clicked and send it to the updated permalink, helping you keep traffic and retaining your Google PR for those links, it’s easy to set up with simple instructions.

So if you are thinking of changing your permalinks on WordPress then this plugin is certainly worth considering.

That sounds pretty handy. I’m currently in the process of restructuring a client’s site and am having to set up 301 redirects on all their nasty old URLs to their shiny new ones. Sadly they aren’t using WordPress though, so I’m going to have to do it all manually :’(

Does that plugin also work when you want to redirect to a different site, if you’re moving your site to another domain, for instance?

No, it is only useful for redirecting on the same site, I expect editing the .htaccess would be the only way to do that.

I bet a lot of people don’t know about this plugin or how to search for it, I wouldn’t.

Yet another one of those plugins that will certainly occupy a space on my never ending, “plugins to use” folder. This is a good tool and one that I am certainly going to use when I decide to change my permalinks in the future.

BTW, I am about to transfer a blogger blog to WP. Will this work in this case? The domain is the same and will not change, however the permalinks will as blogger’s permaking structure is different from that of WP. What do you think?

When you configure the plugin it will ask for the original permalink structure so I suppose you would go from there, so I’m not really sure.

You’re going to help so many with your mention of this Plugin, Karen. Nothing is quite so frustrating as knowing others are clicking on a link to your site and being denied access to the story they were wanting.

I never really liked the long, dated, permalinks and this plugin is a great opportunity to change to some better looking permalinks and not lose link backs ;) Just glad that people will find this post useful..

Great choice! I am running this plugin on my blog since one year back, it helped me to fix the urls problem! but i have learned from this that I have to fix the permalinks immediately when i start a new blog.

I agree, setting up the permalinks to a more friendly looking link should be done from day one, but for a lot of newcomers to WordPress they have no idea how to set them up and use the standard selections in the WordPress settings.

It’s crazy that you posted this, as I JUST discovered this plugin myself today too! It started because @doniree and I were having a discussion of the ramifications of moving a blog from the root of a site to a subdirectory (for example /blog). I was, of course, concerned about losing google juice, etc.

Anyway, in my quest to figure out how to migrate in that way (which I figured out, and will be blogging a solution for probably next week), I found this plugin. Of course, by using it, and changing my permalinks from /year to /category/topic, I now totally screwed up my ability to do an easy rule for migration. But this IS a totally cool plugin.

Luckily, my wordpress site has been set to ‘/%postname%/’ at the outset. But just the same, this plugin is worth remembering as I’ll never know when a friend or my boss would be setting me to rework some old wordpress blog’s permalink system.

Great option. Honestly had a link issue that this would have served two months ago during a server migration for two of my WP sites. So much has gone on since I got involved in WP 2.5 years ago, everyone mentioning what works on ‘their’ blog read regularly means so much more than the tons of sites generating plugins.

You trust someone more who you read regularly than one of many hawking plugins. Sometimes it gets to look like MLM for link-in: use my plug-in, but only if you link back.

I’d rather see someone mention it works first before installing it on my site, like what you’ve done here. Just sayin’. ;)

Hi John, I agree that I like to see real evidence of people using a plugin before I jump on the bandwagon. However, if I can’t find any reliable reviews or information, I’ve got a test site that I use solely for trying out new plugins before using them on any live sites. That way I can do my own evaluation and not have to wait for someone else to post about it.

How much time does changing the URL in Google results take?
Did you face any downtime during this change?
Personally, I am facing problems since I have changed permalink structure using ylsy permalink redirect plugin. Some of the old articles’ URL structure is however changing but new posts aren’t getting indexed :(

Good suggestion will be really appreciated, Thanks.

It all takes time for Google to re-index your new URLs, but if you do have a plugin that uses a 301 redirects then you will not lose your link juice and the old links that Google has listed will re-direct to the new links anyway.

This is why this is useful in conjunction with a Google sitemap plugin. If you are generating and submitting new sitemaps after you update the permalinks, Google will crawl them pretty quickly.
