Panic struck yesterday as my trusty seven port USB Hub decided to stop working and what made the problem even worse is when I unplugged the devices connected and plugged them in the computers USB ports the computer wasn’t recognizing them, so I got straight on my email and contacted my good friend Damion for some help and he offered straight away to come and have a look!
But, this morning I had one of those moments where I thought to myself I wonder if I could do the same as I do with my SKY+ box when there is a problem!
So I powered down the computer and unplugged everything even the power cable from the mains, then left it for a little while, I wasn’t sure if anything would happen, but it was worth a try.
After about five minutes I plugged everything back in and powered up the computer again, fingers crossed I waited patiently for the reboot and the little green lights on the USB Hub, WOW, it actually worked the USB Hub had come back to life and all my gadgets were now activating again, even the USB sockets on the front of the computer were working again, amazing.
Now I’m not sure exactly why this worked, maybe there was a residual current left in the computer somewhere when the USB Hub originally malfunctioned and the computer still thought it wasn’t working and the complete power down removed the current that was held in the computer somewhere, all I know it worked and now I can get back to normal

Isn’t it cool when you can create such successes like that? I’ve had similar experiences – nothing beats it.

Thanks Barbara, I’m just glad I didn’t have to buy a new hub or worse re-install Windows

I would never have that good of luck!
I had a problem with a flash drive, that wouldn’t let me safely remove it. I’m pretty sure it led to my laptop crashing last summer.

I don’t think that it was your flash drive’s fault that you laptop crashed. Maybe it was something wrong with the USB ports and that problem led to the crash.

Most PC problems specially software glitches can be fixed by a simple restart. Now for USB’s, yes restart is enough sometimes but what you did is better as you completely let the computer unpowered <- if theres such a word

I just probably guess the software to recognize the USB did not load properly the first time and when you rebooted the whole thing, it started to work. But anyways, great that it is working..
I hope my laptop gets well the same way…The sound thing is completely gone an I have no clue why it stopped functioning when everything seems just as fine..
Thanks for sharing this tip.

OK I was just about to test a new hub. are you saying to power everything down, disconnect from computer/reconnect to hub and power up?
Basically NOT doing it with everything on…

Yes if you do have problems with the hub malfunctioning this will hopefully get it working again, if you are installing a hub for the first time then make sure you follow the manufacturers instructions

If you are testing a new hub you don’t have to do the things you said. You just plug it in and install the driver if its needed. If you happen to have problems with it than try the method Karen described and hope you will be as lucky as she was
You really have to love a simple fix. Especially one with no cost! I’ll remember this for when my USB hub starts acting up.

It certainly saves forking out for an engineer or even a new hub

Good thinking on your part. I don’t know how much you paid for the hub but is is one of those things you probably had for a while and no longer have a warranty for. Now that I am installing more hardware (mic, external hard drive, speakers, etc.) I’m starting to run of of USB slots to use. I’d better start looking at USB hubs. How much do they run?

It wasn’t cheap and I have had it for a while, but it is a essential piece of kit to have! The one I have has seven sockets and is linkable to other hubs so you can chain them together.

As Keith said “You really have to love a simple fix.”
It reminds me of when I was a kid. I would take things apart and put them back together again. Even though I didn’t see anything wrong it worked when I got it back together. I never figured out what was wrong or how I fixed it.

It’s probably best to try the simple methods first
Resetting the power and unplugging everything is usually a good call and should fix most problems. I would be worried if that didn’t work though.
