Ways Of Curbing Your Bad Language!
Posted by Karen in UncategorizedI’m telling you all now that I’m not going to say any swear words in this post, except for the ones that I use, well sort of!
In this day and age swearing has become a part of every day life, but there are easy ways to curb swearing by replacing it with some well chosen alternatives and I thought I would bring you some of my favourites and been a bit of a sci-fi fan, you can probably imagine where this is going, they are from some of my favourite sci-fi shows and films
For starters a lot of people use the F-Word, you know the one I mean, but I use a replacement when needed and my favourites are FRAK which is widely used in Battlestar Galactica and FRELL which was used in the superb Farscape, which I have to admit I do use to describe some of the idiots on the road these days “Frellwit”
But I also use other sci-fi term such as PooDoo from Star Wars which is translates as Bantha Sh**, see told you I was going to keep it clean
Gorram is another one which is from Firefly and is a working of Goddamn and when I was younger I used the wonderful Shazbat from Mork and Mindy, amazing what you can say in front of your parents when they haven’t a clue what you’re on about
Another one is just replacing words like Sh** with sugar or Shitake, oh did I swear there, well only for the first four letters
So as you can see we can have some fun with swearing even when we don’t swear, so what do you do to alter a swear word, do you change a few letters or even create a new word, I’d love to know, but please, if you are going to add the original swear word in your comment, then at least asterisk(*) it, let’s keep it clean for the kids sake

A close friend of mine had trouble with her young son swearing – a bad habit he’d picked up from his father. He was a fan of Thomas the Tank Engine (big here in the UK – don’t know about the US). It’s a kids show about a talking train. Anyway, his dad got around the swearing issue by saying “dirty sidings” (a reference to the show) every time his son swore. Believe it or not he gradually stopped swearing as he didn’t want to think he was bringing disrepute to his favorite show!

Over the weekend my aunt shared a word a she heard a little boy use on Wife Swap as opposed to the potty mouth words he was accustomed to and I loved it! I just can’t remember it to pass it on to you.
I don’t use “swear” words at any time since I never have a need for them. But, I notice my son and son-in-law like to throw around a word that bothers me so I introduced them to a substitute that’s close enough for anyone to know what they mean.
I must say your list is a little complex for me, I’ve noticed you used the word FRAK and I think, Frellwit too. However, I thought they were terms from your neck of the woods. I am far from a SciFi girl so that went way over my head.
Karen, I didn’t sleep all night because I thought this was going to be a controversial post. I studied up on every debatable subject known to man … except this one.

Certainly an idea which I’ve tried before.
My own thought is that bad language doesn’t have to be a big deal if people who swear also have lots to contribute, lots of sensible, thoughtful, informative things to say.
I swear quite a bit. But I know people wouldn’t consider my words badly chosen, not at all.

When I moved up to Yorkshire I got into the habit of using the word that begins with a ‘b’ and rhymes with sugar – no idea why, I kind of absorbed it from the locals. However, it’s not a word I wanted my children picking up and repeating at school, so I switched it to bugre – pronounced boo-gray. Someone once asked me where I heard this new word, so I told them it was the French version of the one I was trying to avoid saying lol

Hahaha. The reply with the French version made me laugh. Have you met that person again to see if he or she use the Frecnh version of the word?

Hey there Karen,
Frak is a good one. I actually use that one at times. Battlestar Galactica changed the swearing game with that one. Before we know it… Frak will be considered a swear word too. lol Later!

Shitake is a good one. It lets you get it out without really saying it. I like using initials, since we use acronyms for everything else right. Like everyone knows WTF, but do you know what BTFU is? Beat the Frak up!!

Great post! I do think we could do with less cussing in this world. I never understand the need to fill a movie with cursing for the sake of adding cursing. I never swear (at least out loud) and I use whatever crazy thing comes to mind when I hit my head on my car door or whatever crazy thing happens. Freaking ___ is my favorite substitute.

Hi Ashley, thanks for your input
I enjoyed reading your post and Yes you kept is clean (as clean as possible).Replacement is a good way of curbing bad languages while speaking.Wouldn’t it be better if we control our emotions, because if we do so then we do not have to control our tongue.Often I wonder though how this F-word started.

The F-word has been in use for many years and I think it has been around since AD 772, but don’t quote me on that, it could be earlier!

It is quite kind of hillarious reading through all of the comments. And it sounds just like you guys would want to hide away swear words with other words. But now that you mention it – I think alot of people do this all of the time.

I really love Battlestar Galactica and saw through the whole series in a matter of weeks. Did the same as you and kept saying FRAK for months. It wasn’t my intention though, it just stuck.

It’s amazing how popular “FRAK” actually is
In the UK, there’s a cult sitcom called Father Ted. One of the priests says one word, and one word only… Feck!
In another cult sitcom called Red Dwarf, the term “Smeg” is used, plus its derivatives… smegging, smegged, etc! Well worth adding to your anti-swearing vocab!

I remember “Feck” being used way before Father Ted when Podge & Rodge used to use it when they were telling there scary stories on RTL, wow I miss that show. Smeg is also the name of a make of fridge!

I figure the best way to curb swearing is to have a kid. The first time your adorable little tyke pops up with “Oh, DAMN, it’s waining again!” you’re going to start watching what you say!
My husband thought it was fine to use French curse words until our eldest came out with “Tab’NAC, femme!” (Tabernacle, woman!) in front of my French father-in-law. At least he knew where to put the blame. (I have NO idea why the French use church words as curse words)

All good suggestions and good for a morning chuckle as I read through the list. I am not much of a swearing person but if the need arises I am not one to mix words, since a lot of time is just myself and the dog then I have the freedom to say what I need to.
