Wordpress 2.8.6 Just Released! Upgrade Now
Posted by Karen in blogging tips, wordpress, tags: blogging, wordpress, wordpress securityIt only seems like the other week when Wordpress upgraded to 2.8.5, now another release is available, Wordpress 2.8.6 fixes two security problems that can be exploited by registered, logged in users who have posting privileges.
I’ve just backed up the database of my blog and used the auto update option in the Wordpress dashboard and it’s updated to the latest version, so far everything seems to be running ok, and all my plugins seem to be behaving themselves.

Just updated today – I’m always worried something will go wrong, but it went well and there are no problems with the site.
Thanks for telling what the update was about: I actually hadn’t bothered to read why there was an update, I’m in the habit of updating automatically because I don’t want any security risks.

Oh that upgrade took me hours to get through.
First, the automatic upgrade failed. So I had to do it manually. Then I forgot NOT to upload the wp-content folder, so all my stuff (uploads, plugins, themes) etc – GONE!!!
Luckily I had a local backup from just two days before since I just moved to VPS hosting within my hosting company, so I had to re-upload everything.
Then WordPress was acting weird, could no longer auto-upgrade plugins as it could before. Found it was because all my new stuff had the owner of my FTP account and not the “www” account of the Apache server. Figured it was faster just to wipe it all and re-install WP from within the VPS container so everything would have the right owner, rather than going through all files and changing owner.
Took me some hours, but now I’m on 2.8.6 too

I also found the WP 2.8.6 auto upgrade did not work. But after deactivating all my plugins, WordPress updated automatically.

Exactly. But what can we do? Besides, the upgrades only give us good and better improvements. I just hate having to spend time doing it and fearing that it might fail in the process. When it fails, there’s another dreaded process of having to pull the backup and spending another, longer time to redo things.
2.8.6? The last time we were forced to upgrade to 2.8.5 was due to a threat of vulnerability. Is there another loophole in 2.8.5 that needs to be covered up by 2.8.6?

Did it happen to anyone that your Akismet got deactivated upon the upgrade? I was seeing some annoyingly high number of spam comments being posted today and only then realized that Akismet had gone into “deactivated” mode..

THe constant upgrading is a bit much, I wish they’d hold off a little longer and just add more with each upgrade rather than update everytime they have an idea
