I’ve written so many articles about using Twitter for Social Networking and I have mentioned briefly about the bio on your Twitter profile, so now, I thought it was about time I went into this a bit more.

Your Twitter bio is possible one of the most important things that people will check when they view your Twitter page and leaving this blank is a complete No No! And yet again filling it with spammy words just to get followers is another NO NO, as most tweeters will know what your doing it..

Since originally writing this article I have updated it and extended it a little with some more useful tips

TwitterSo what should you put in your Twitter bio, well, make it informative, but not personal, as an example mine reads:

Owner and Famous Blogger of Blazing Minds, lover of tech, life & people who make her laugh. A Twitter celebrity in the making. http://blazingminds.co.uk

As you can see, it says what I do and a few of the things I like, you  may of noticed that I’ve also added my URL into the bio, this helps when your Twitter bio is listed on other sites that may not mention your URL. What you shouldn’t be putting is things like:

Website seo, blogging tips, thesis, blogs, blog design

This is just spammy and it shows that the tweeter knows that people will search through the bio looking for those keywords to follow them, yes it is OK to add a few keywords, but add them in a sentence, not just a list of words!

Example: I’m a blogger that writes about blogging tips, blog design, thesis and many more interesting blog related articles

If you want people to follow you on twitter show them that you are worth their time and let them see from your bio that you are not just another one of those bots that is only there for the numbers. By showing that you’re a human being with a well formed and interesting Twitter Bio people will have an inkling of your Twitter streams content.

Try the following tips in your Twitter Bio:

  1. Tell Tweeters what you do
  2. Show a side of your personality
  3. Add something a little personal, but not something no one should know!
  4. Never include politics, religion or sexuality
  5. Have fun, but be informative and most of all be HUMAN

So there you have it a few little tips, that I hope will help.

If you have any Twitter tips on what you think your should add in the bio then let us all know, also if you have found this article about your Twitter Bio, then please ReTweet it to your friends and followers ;)

This is really good stuff. I have a Twitter account but rarely tweet. I just attended a webinar today on Twitter basics, as I feel it’s about time to be more active with Twitter. I like the list, but can add to #4 to avoid to much business self promotion. At least in my industry, real estate agents tend to look at Twitter, Facebook and other social networks as their next farm to ‘work.’ Business spam is a real turn off.

The main companion for those using Twitter are URL shorteners. I used to use bit.ly but I now use goo.gl, Google’s very own URL shortener. Which not only scans the destination address but also tracks the clicks that is made. In addition to that it is tied to Google Analytics for those who love to look at a lot of statistics.

I don’t think only attractive author’s bio will target you more followers. The first thing one need is to have some visitors on your twitter profile. Only thing you can do is make them more targeted with design/description.

I am not a user myself but I find it amazing how many people seem to have no idea how to make use of bios properly, not only with twitter. You have to mention your keywords, what you do and this in a manner that shows that you are a real and interesting person who is worth following. I understand that it’s hard to put all that in two or three sentences but it has a tremendous effect.

Hi Tuan, it’s not necessary to add your URL in your bio, but as some sites only show your bio and not the URL then it’s quite handy to have your URL in your bio section, showing those that see it that you have a website and could gain you possible new readers/visitors ;)

Thank you for featuring my article in your post (I posted the basicblogtips.com one).

Do agree with you regarding the lack of keywords. It really doesn’t matter for SEO (would you rather the traffic going to your site, or to Twitter.com?), I do like keeping mine personal though. Or attempting to at least :)

I also avoid words such as “guru”, “ninja” or “thought leader”. They’re overused (unless they really are a ninja, in which case that’s awesome).

If more Twitter users looked at the bio as more of an intro to a resume or even SEO for a weblog or webpage, they would take advantage of it a lot more. That bio is much more powerful than what the average joe thinks. It’s an introduction into the type of tweeter, the type of goals, and your focus for your twitter might be at the time. It also helps to have a good Twitter name to really understand what the person is about. A simple message or a name correlating to your business is always a way to attract followers.
