Black Mirror meets A Quiet Place in gripping sci-fi thriller A New World Order from director Daniel Raboldt in his feature debut, which gets its UK premiere today (23 August 2021) from Reel 2 Reel Films.
We are taken to a dystopian future and war raging between humankind and machines. Staying completely silent is the only way to avoid detection, and Thomasz (Stefan Ebel), a deserter who tries to hide away from the war, doesn’t want to be involved in the violence at all. However, he soon meets Lilja (Siri Nase – Perfume) who is the sole survivor of a resistance group and wants to fight the machines – soon Thomasz’s plan of laying low is upended as he’s dragged into Lilja’s fight for survival.
As the machines get closer and the threat grows, Thomasz and Lilja must band together to stave off the danger, but will they be able to cling on to life and avoid the seemingly inevitable path of destruction?
A New World Order starts as in means to go on with no dialogue as we are introduced to Thomasz (Ebel) as returns to his cabin in the woods, set up a type of invisible shield around it and settles down for the night, we are then given a look into his past in the form of a nightmare about what has happened with the invasion.
The film does remind me a lot of A Quiet Place with the moments of silence, but it does ramp it up with some nice flashbacks as we see the moments that have brought Thomasz and Lilja together, the look of the invading robots reminded me of the tripods from H.G.Wells’ War of the Worlds, but I have to say they looked pretty good.
Director/writer Daniel Raboldt has certainly put together an intriguing, interesting and slightly confusing movie that may jump on the back end of the likes of A Quiet Place Part II, but the lack of dialogue isn’t really missed as there is a great soundtrack from Nora Ebel that accompanies the film.
A New World Order flows slowly but efficiently as the story moves along, it’s not going to be to everyone’s liking, but it’s great to see a film that takes two characters, removes the amount of dialogue that can flood a movie and brings it down to the bare bones of the subject matter.
I have to say that I think that a lot of the scenery was the star for me with A New World Order, the movie was shot beyond the arctic circle in Finland and it looks great, even the cinematography in the night scenes is nicely shot and lit, as key elements are nicely visible while still keeping the dark tones to a minimal amount.
Shhhhh stay silent!
