Get ready for some craziness as we check out Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires, it’s not 1985 anymore…it’s 1986, and Chuck Steel is ‘the best God damn cop on the force.’ But even this maverick, renegade, loose cannon, lone wolf, cop on the edge, who doesn’t play by the rules, has his work cut out when he discovers an evil is about to descend on the city of Los Angeles: the scourge of the TRAMPIRES – mutant hybrids of vampire and tramp!
So let’s kick this off with this thought, this is certainly not an animation for kids and although it is very tongue in cheek with its 80s-style action cop and plenty of blood flowing, Chuck Steel is one of those movies that is so crazy that you just can’t stop watching it once you start and the action pulls you in right after the opening credits.
The animation in Chuck Steel is brilliant and although the movie is bonkers (which is one of the things I loved about it), the style of animation certainly suits the content, Steel is a little more polished in his looks from Raging Balls of Steel Justice, which you can find on the extras of the Blu-ray, but all the character traits are still there including the F-Bombs and other craziness.
When it comes to the other characters in the movie, they really don’t hold back on ways to offend the viewer and the modern-day “snowflakes” are really going to be up in arms with the insults and vulgarity that is rife in Chuck Steel, but hey let’s all just take a moment to consider that this is all part of the character and the film, so take it with a large pinch of salt and just sit back and enjoy the gore, foul language, insults and so much more.
As this movie is set in the 80s, it comes with a brilliant soundtrack from some great artists and I loved it when a Vixen track came on, it made me rather nostalgic for those days of long-haired rock groups, and big guitar solos and music you could actually sing along to. There is also some great music from Joris de Man for the rest of the soundtrack, many gamers will know the name from video game music from games such as Killzone and Horizon Zero Dawn.
The voice cast was a pleasant surprise with Jennifer Saunders as Dr. Alex Cular and Paul Whitehouse and The Wise One, directed and writer Mike Mort voices Chuck Steel and he sounds great as do all the cast in this bonkers film.
As I mentioned there is plenty of gore for horror fans in the movie and although animated it really does have the shock factor with guts flowing out, exploding heads and so much more that would make a live-action movie certainly have that 18 certificate rating, but hey we can make do with a 15 for this one.
Chuck Steel: Night of the Tramipres on Blu-ray
The movie really looks good on Blu-ray and it also sounds good as well, the first time I watched Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires I was impressed with the vibrant colours, and dark areas that still had definition to see things that were in the background and the overall sharpness to the look.
The sound did default to the stereo 2.0 mix which although did sound good, pales in comparison to the 5.1 surround mix that I made sure was set on my second viewing, this really gives the sound mix more depth for the release and makes great use of the rear speakers.
