We all know the story of Cinderella: the young girl living as a slave to her wicked stepmother and evil sometimes ugly sisters?
I thought that this musical version would just be another take of that story. Well, it is of course but also so much more.
It is surprisingly a lot better than other versions of the story. It is a great modern and sometimes funny twist and takes on the old classic. I absolutely enjoyed it right from the beginning especially the songs and the remakes of already popular songs were fantastic. The way they were introduced into the story and the actors really did bring them to life in a way that you could not help but sing or tap along.
The cast was perfectly matched to their characters and are amazing. I liked how this was made so that the new generation of today would enjoy and fall in love with an all-time classic just like I did with the original.
The costumes were fantastic, I especially liked the diverse costumes worn by the different guests at the ball.
I also loved the way this story also told the undiscussed struggles of the women of the past, how they were not allowed to follow their ambitions or dreams, how they were not taken seriously and having to put their talents and passions on a backburner to focus on home and family.
It even addresses the stereotypical role of “royalty” and how they had to carry on the expected role of marrying to further the kingdom and not for love and the role of mothers shown here by the stepmother that she had to curve her own talents and passion to be a 24 hour devoted wife and take care of her own two daughters.
The all-star cast is absolutely brilliant, Pierce Brosnan (Mrs Doubtfire, Goldeneye) is fantastic as the king, Minnie Driver (Goldeneye, The phantom of the opera) stars as the queen and really does her role justice. Both she and Brosnan also starred in Goldeneye together and have the same on-screen chemistry as they did back then.
Idina Menzel is perfectly cast as the wicked stepmother and plays the part perfectly. Camila Cabello stars as Cinderella and is absolutely amazing, really brings the character to life and many will be able to identify with her struggles.
Billy Porter is really amazing in his role as the fairy godmother too.
The supporting cast including James Corden, Romesh Ranganathan and Nicholas Galitzine really brings this fantastic new take come to life. The songs range from all genres and decades really does also introduce a new generation to popular songs from yesteryear as well as today.
It truly is a movie the whole family can enjoy as we was watching it our 10 month old daughter was playing and even she stopped regularly and watched the magic happen and love the song by queen. So when I say the whole family will enjoy that is exactly what I mean.
Even if you are not a fan of the classic original or other takes on the story I highly recommend this feel-good musical take. It really is a jukebox movie. Wonderful acting by each and every one of the actors. Great incorporation of best-loved songs of yesteryear and today. Loved the song versions and the singers.
The all-star cast has done full justice and more to this new classic take on the original. It really does deserve to be seen on the big screen and worth the wait as it was due to be released in March 2020 but was delayed because of COVID. Cinderella is showing now on Amazon Prime Video.
