Synopsis – A child unleashes a malevolent force as his mother prepares dinner.
Rabbit will be playing at Dead and Sudburied on Sunday, 19th October at 7:15 pm.
Q. Your film Rabbit has been selected for Dead and Sudburied, can you tell us a bit about what we can expect from the film?
A. Rabbit was captured on 16mm and the organic qualities really come to life watching the film on a large screen in a theatre.
Q. How did the idea for the film come about and what were your inspirations when writing the script?
A. I was interested in exploring the tension between a parent and child through the death of a rabbit, and how a child reacts to a parent’s behaviour through their imagination.
Q. What were some of your influences for the look and style of the film?
A. This film is based on a memory. I watched Spencer (2021) around the time I was developing the project and was taken with how much that film felt like a memory and ghost story. It was those qualities that inspired the look of Rabbit and shoot 16mm.
Q. Did you make any changes from the original script during filming?
A. We had originally intended on shooting a longer short film, but because of budget constraints and scheduling, we aimed to capture the tension between our characters and the world they inhabit in a 2-minute film.
Q. What were some of your favourite memories of making the Film?
A. Working with my team. As a writer/director, I have ideas in how I want the story and production to play out. But when other team members come on board and bring their own set of questions and thoughts to a project, that’s when the fun begins and it grows beyond my initial expectations.
Q. Did you experience any issues during filming?
A. No issues per se, but we had only one day on location, three rolls of film and managed to capture 34 shots. That really is a testament to a great collaboration with a fantastic team.
Q. What makes Rabbit stand out as something different in the horror genre?
A. It’s really a drama about the tension between a mother and child, and the horror follows.
Q. What do you hope people take away after watching the film?
A. To think about how the child is dealing with their experience and what might be part of their imagination, and what might not.
Q. Do you have any other projects which you are currently working on?
A. We enjoyed creating Rabbit so much, that we expanded the universe into a feature film currently titled Cabbage. A lot of our crew from the short is returning for the feature and we’re looking to start production shortly.
Q. If someone was looking to get into filmmaking film what advice would you give them?
A. Just start telling stories. You don’t need to wait for permission, all the tools you need are available. You just need a story and an iPhone.
