A struggling all female metal band called “The Virginia Bitches” have a taste for blood and while on tour their van breaks down in the middle of nowhere. Seeking help they come across a town full of cannibals led by an infamous Warlock.
In a new exclusive interview on Blazing Minds, I got the chance to ask Writer-Director Scott B. Hansen a few questions about his film Devour, which will have its UK Premiere at The Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Sunday 25th January at 20:00hrs.
Q. Your film Devour has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival. Can you tell us what we can expect?
A. Chaos, blood and carnage to the 12th degree. Devour is a fun wild ride about a metal band who are vampires but they meet their match when they pass through a town run by an all powerful warlock.
Q. You co-wrote the script with Desiree Hansen. What were some of your inspirations when writing the script and what was your process for writing together?
A. We really enjoy it, it’s usually quite a long process of making what we call a “Battle Board” of concepts and forming them on a big white board in our basement, from there we work out a story and characters with pictures and start churning on concepts and things we want to see or try in a movie. The freedom of this part is where the magic happens and a lot of beautiful accidents as “Desiree’ says. A collision of ideas from two creative people who are avid people watchers and we enjoy this ride in this thing called “life” and enjoy our fictional pleasantries while writing new characters and wild situations.
Q. Did you have any of the cast in mind for the characters when writing the script?
A. We actually didn’t have any of them in mind, we auditioned like crazy for the movie. Well I take that back we did have Marie who is played by Alexandra Lucchessi in the movie and she’s from our first movie called Bad Candy (2020). Devour is actually in the same universe with some criss-crossing characters so it was instrumental to bring her back when writing this. We call it a “horror-verse” as we have a 5 movie plan to tell more tales of the infamous town of New Salem.
Q. What were some of your influences for the look and style of the film?
A. I would say totally inspired by From Dusk till Dawn (1996) meets Big Trouble in Little China (1986) with a hint of Near Dark (1987) for sure. Three amazing movies and wild rides.
Q. Did you make any changes from the original script during filming?
A. Definitely, it happens a lot and sometimes when making a movie locations dictate new routes in dialogue or action and you just have to kin to move with the new direction or pace to keep things on track.
Q. What were some of your favourite moments during filming?
A. Seeing the werewolf in all its 11 foot Glory walking around in a set we built for 2 months to kill 33 people in 3 minutes. Spoiler, there is a lot of werewolf kills in this flick.
Q. Did you experience any issues during filming?
A. None. Just missing seeing the monster suits running around when the lights go bright.
Q. What makes Devour stand out as something different in the horror genre?
A. We take some big risks in the movie and don’t look back at all. A wild mix of comedy, weird, extreme gore and explosions Devour is a popcorn horror that deserves your attention.
Q. What do you hope people take away after watching the film?
A. We are normal we promise.
Q. Do you have any other projects which you are currently working on?
A. I am working on the 3rd movie in our horror-verse called How The Night Receives Them which were in talks with Keith David and Corey Taylor from Slipknot. We also have Andrew Divoff from Wishmaster (1997) locked in cast wise and Spooky Madison.
Q. If someone was looking to write and direct their own film what advice would you give them?
A. Pick up a camera and shoot something.
