When an illicit bare-knuckle boxing match ends in upset: the boxer with long odds wins, and the punters are furious in the new movie Fixed. Daz (Nicholas Clarke, are we dead yet) skims a wedge off the winnings and bolts, quickly followed by angry patrons. They catch him, beat him – in the confusion, someone stabs him – and drag him back to the warehouse, leaving him locked in a broom cupboard to await the arrival of the boss. Now, Daz must figure out a way to escape, pay off the man who wanted the winnings, and make his flight to Spain, all while trying not to bleed out.
That is the scene for this edge of your seat action movie.
Nicholas Clarke is perfect as the lead character and really keeps our attention as he tries to escape. He tries his best by calling everyone he knows as he literally sticks his broken phone back together.
As the story progresses we learn about the background of his character and what led him to where he is today.
He was planning on going straight and moving to Spain with his girlfriend, but as with all good movies things don’t quite go to plan.
The story has a feel of reservoir dogs about it, except we already know who the rat is. Also, the way the story stays with Daz and is not shot from different angles makes it more intriguing as we don’t know who is coming in next or what is about to happen.
On the technical side of things, it is fantastic too. It’s all dark, gritty and grimy. Without giving too much away they really use the trick of the light to bring the scene alive too and keep our attention as everything changes around Daz but also stays the same. The way it would if we was the ones that were stabbed, heavily bleeding and locked in the cupboard.
I felt different emotions towards the main character too that I was not expecting. At times I felt sorry for him, then thought he deserves to be where he is and then fighting on his side for him to be free.
I would recommend checking this movie out as there isn’t anything quite like this out there at the moment. The style of acting, the use of everything available to the movie producers make it fantastic.
Fixed has a great supporting cast including Phillip Ray Tommy (King Arthur) and Dean Kilbey (Eastenders) really helps to give the story even more teeth and not too much violence either. Sometimes this kind of genre has too much violence and gore and sometimes not enough. But this one has it just right.
Fixed is, at times, an intense affair. Clarke’s performance anchors the film, his desperation palpable and compelling. This is strong and definitely worth a look.
