GOD SQUAD is the latest horror-comedy from Mad Science Films, the team behind the outrageously funny anthology segment ‘The Toy’ from the feature ‘Virus Detected’. The film gained a lot of buzz on the festival circuit, and for me, the highlight of the anthology is the film’s unique take on AI and its visually mind-blowing execution.
With their latest film, GOD SQUAD, there is less focus on the visual comedy, instead focusing more on the verbal delivery of the brilliant script by Lucas Eisele, both on and off screen. The story follows Father Dan (Rob Murphy) and Harry (Lucas Eisele), a mismatched pair of specialist exorcists from the God Squad, who are called to a family home where the parents believe their daughter is possessed. While the premise sounds simple, the film cleverly layers in unexpected twists that keep the story engaging.
Although there is still some visual humour, it’s the dialogue between the characters that really elevates the film. Murphy and Eisele have fantastic chemistry as two priests who seem to find themselves in several awkward situations. Their frustration with each other and uncomfortable encounters are brilliantly worked into the story and create some genuinely hilarious moments and additional layers to the story.
Another standout performance comes from Earl Palmer as the camp and Father Frank. The naivety in his unfiltered oversharing and comedic timing makes him fun to watch and a contrast to the more grounded characters around him.
Despite the film’s simple premise, the short packs in a surprising amount of comedy, ranging from dark comedy to toilet humour. It won’t be to everyone’s taste, but for me and many others at Horror-on-Sea, I found it hilarious.
Directors James Plumb and James Morrisey prove once again how good they are at balancing the dark satirical tones of the script’s comedy with the tongue-in-cheek performances to create something truly original.
