The Cineworld Secret Screaming 10 has been revealed to be “Good Boy,” a story about a loyal dog named Indy. When Indy moves to a rural family home with his owner, Todd, he discovers supernatural forces lurking in the shadows. As dark entities threaten his human companion, the brave pup must fight to protect the one he loves most.
Good Boy is directed by Ben Leonberg in his feature directorial debut, co-written by Leonberg and Alex Cannon. This is a movie that is different to most haunted house/supernatural movies in that we are taken on a journey from Indy’s point of view as he tries to keep his owner safe in a house in the woods that has something just not right with it.
Todd’s grandfather died in the house, and all the family think that there is something bad about the house, but Todd has been left the house, and he isn’t going to give it up easily. With Indy by his side, what could go wrong!
The movie has a rather short run time of only 73 minutes, but to be honest, it really doesn’t need any more or less to give you some nice chills and make you wonder (if you have a dog) why do dogs act so strangely in certain places and never leave your side!
The cast is small and it’s all it needs, but it is certainly Indy who steals the scenes with his adorable eyes and reactions to what is going on in the house; you just want to pick him up and cuddle him. The cinematography in Good Boy is very nicely done, with a fantastic use of lighting to give you just enough to think you have seen something in the corner of the room. Look out for a scene with Indy in the car, and you can just make out something outside as Indy looks through the rear window. It’s a rather creepy scene, and it does take a brief moment until you make something out.
The movie isn’t packed with scares or cheap tricks to make you jump; it is wonderfully shot, making you wonder what you are seeing. The sound also has a good mix and works very well with moments where you just hear something and wonder what it is and where it is coming from.
Good Boy is one of those films that isn’t going to be for everyone, but if you give it a chance and see how well it is made and take in the story, plus look at it from Indy’s point of view, then you will find yourself being pulled in deeper and deeper to find out who or what Indy is protecting Todd from.
The final twist pays off very well; it becomes rather emotional, and yes, I did feel my eyes start to fill up slightly as Indy and Todd’s outcome came to fruition.
I’m so glad that the Cineworld Secret Screaming 10 was Good Boy, it may not be a “Screaming”, but it was a great watch on a Monday night at the cinema.
