The gang return to our cinema screens in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and the other night I popped over to Cineworld in Broughton to check out the movie in RealD 3D during the midnight screening.
It was a gamble for the studio when they released the first movie back in 2014 and it was a gamble that paid off nig time as the movie became so popular that fans just wanted more from the Guardians. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 brings back Peter Quill (played by Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel).
James Gunn also returns to direct the movie that sees the movie following on from the previous movie with Peter’s Awesome Mixtape #2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a continuation of the team’s adventures as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage and to finally meet his father, Ego (played by Kurt Russell).
As with the previous movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a stunning looking movie with some amazing visuals that not only make the film look good and is very pleasing on the eyes but also brings the story to life. The opening sequence with Quill’s parents looks amazing, lovely vibrant colours and a young Kurt Russell, yes it seems that Disney are loving the chance to make the actors young again, but according to the reports not that much CGI jiggery-pokery was needed to make Kurt Russell young, just a few flattening of the lines on his face! But still, wow!!
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – Baby Groot is a Scene-Stealer!
Remember the end of the first movie, when we all went a little gaga over Groot dancing in his plant pot. Well now we have the scene-stealing Baby Groot and every moment that he is on the screen you just can’t help going, “awwwww”, right from the start with him doing his dance moves for the opening credits to the point of him showing that no matter how small he maybe he can still hold his own. Voiced again by Vin Diesel, Baby Groot is certainly a character that almost everyone will be talking about when coming out of the cinema, heck I’m doing it now. I AM GROOT!
With a dancing Baby Groot comes a superb soundtrack, Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 2 is a brilliant collection of tracks that not only has you enjoying the movie, but also tapping your feet, with tracks from Fleetwood Mac, Sweet, Cheap Trick, Cat Stevens and more this soundtrack is on par with the previous movie’s and I dare anyone not to enjoy it!
But let’s not forget the other cast that is in the movie, including Karen Gillan (Nebula), Michael Rooker (Yondu) and Sean Gunn (Kraglin), all of which put in amazing performances as the characters that we have come to know from the previous movie.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – It’s About Family!
With Quill finally meeting his father, the film is very much family based and this comes across quite strongly, not so much from Quill and Ego, but more so from the Guardians themselves, you get the feeling that they are a family of many different sorts, that are not only together because they need to be in order to save the universe, but are together because they want to be, this can be seen in one of the five (yes five) post-credits scenes with Quill and Groot!
And this movie is also a great movie for families to see, yes there is a lot of action and “comic book” violence, but it’s fun, since seeing the midnight screening I’ve spoken to families with kids of around the age of 8 upwards and they all enjoyed the movie, they laughed and cried, very much like I did during the screening.
As with the previous movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has some great cameos and some nice touches throughout the movie, with the likes of Howard the Duck (Anyone would think that we will be getting a reboot of the 80s movie at this rate), Sylvester Stallone and David Hasselhoff and let’s not forget the man himself, Stan Lee who not only appears in the film but is also in one of the post-credits scenes, all leading up to the fan-based idea that Stan Lee’s cameos could mean that he is a watcher!
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Takes us into the Third Dimension
The midnight screening that I went to over in Broughton’s Cineworld was the version in RealD 3D, many of you who read my reviews will know my love for 3D and the Broughton cinema has crystal clear screens to see 3D in, so how did the 3D hold up during the movie, well it held up brilliantly!
Many of the scenes have so much depth to them, the 3D worked like a charm and a film like this certainly work well to bring the audience into the action and the many worlds that the movie takes you to, a particular moment that did have me shifting in my seat was a moment when Yondu is controlling his Yaka Arrow and it flies towards the screen, damn that thing really felt like it was going to shoot out the screen! Now that’s how 3D should work.
This is certainly a film to see in its 3D glory and if you can watch 3D then I would certainly recommend it.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 IMAX 3D (Update)
So when I originally wrote this review I saw I mentioned that I would bring you an update of the movie in its IMAX 3D format and here it is.
Two things stand out with the film in IMAX 3D, one is the size of the screen and its seamless jump from widescreen format into the IMAX format making the screen give you more of a feeling of being swallowed up into expanse of space and with some of the locations in the movie, the second is the use of the frame breaking although there isn’t that much, the frame breaking scenes work very well.
For example one of the scenes has Yondu’s Yaka Arrow out of the visible movie screen and hovering in the black line area of the film, give lots of depth. Another scene is the Scavenger Ship moving from the screen and crossing over the black line at the bottom of the screen, this is subtle but wow is it an effect that looks amazing on the massive IMAX screen over at Cineworld in Broughton. The Imax 3D version looks crisp and clean like the RealD 3D version, so the choice of format is really down to what you prefer, but the fillm is still amazing in either format.
What’s Next For The Guardians
Well with the announcement that “The Guardians will be back”, we can look forward to seeing them in a third movie, also we will be seeing them in Avengers: Infinity War when it hits cinemas in April 2018.
