Ghosted, written by, produced by and starring Jade Asha has already garnered 17 awards, including the Hollywood Gold Award for Best Indie Feature, the New York Movie Awards for Indie Feature Silver Award, the Cinematic European Film Festival award for Best Actress and the Anatolian Film Awards for Best Actress and Best Comedy. Following selected screenings, the film will be available later this year. We catch up with Jade for a chat…
What inspired your new romantic comedy, Ghosted and what is your background?
Every time I went through yet another breakup, I would turn to a romcom to reassure myself that I wasn’t the only one going through this torment. I decided to turn my experiences into a film in the hope that I could help others. I also wanted to create relatable characters; British, diverse, and with money struggles – like the people in my world.
My background is – I was born in London to a Mauritian Father and English Mother, neither has any connection to the arts, although they do both love the arts. In my teens, I lived in Norwich, moved back to London at 17 and have been hustling in the acting industry since then.
Can you tell us a bit more about Ghosted?
It focuses on a struggling actress named Mercy, who returns to the dating scene after a bad breakup -she’s very confident that meeting guys is easy. After being turned down for a one-night stand with nice guy Michael, she turns to dating apps to speed up the rebounding process. Mercy’s girlfriends push her into meeting American architect Blake, who she falls head over heels for on their first date. Fearing that she may never see him again, she decides to take fate into her own hands!
We made Ghosted on a very low budget –with a tenacious, focused, and passionate cast and crew. I want to continue to make diverse, female-led content, providing opportunities to international talent and talented newcomers.
What other projects do you have coming up?
We recently wrapped on our second feature film with the director Daniel Pacquette (who also directed Ghosted). It’s another romcom because we love the genre, it’s called DUE DATING. It’s about a woman who is pregnant and dating and a blogger (Rowland Sterling) who dates her to get a story and save his job. I wrote the film when I fell pregnant and played the role while 7 months pregnant! Growing a child is also a pretty exciting project.
Production begins later this year on Good Enough – about a woman who seeks the help of her three ex-partners to pursue the man of her dreams.
