Described by The Guardian as a “fine singer” and “an eye (and ear) opener” by fRoots Magazine, Katie Rose, an innovative vocal artist and community vocal coach, recently released two mesmerizing remixes of “Can U Feel It,” masterfully produced by renowned EDM music producer and DJ Michael Doiley, on the Spring Equinox.
Releasing her latest single “Can U Feel It,” on March 21st was no accident: it chimes in with the song’s core message of love, hope, connection and renewal. After all, March 21st – the Spring Equinox – heralds spring, when day and night are actually ‘equalized’. Indeed, it is a turning point for new life, spring and for hope eternal… it is a beacon of light we can turn to and internalize to keep us strong in these tumultuous times. Also, fun fact – the video to the track features Katie dreamily wandering around the famous red Sphinxes in London’s Crystal Palace Park!
We decided to have a chat with Katie about life, music and everything!…
What inspired you to get producer Michael Doiley to do an EDM remix of your original acoustic track “Go the Distance”?
During lockdown, I invited my good friend Michael Doiley to attend the (very strange) socially distant launch of the album Flame in 2021 and was thrilled when he said he’d like to remix Go the Distance.
What made you change the title to the remix to “Can U Feel It”.. ?
can u feel it is one of the vocal harmony lines running through the song and Michael picked this out and chose it as the title. He says “This mix represents a real fusion in so many ways, and so it’s quite appropriate to ask the listener, ‘Can U Feel It?'”
What qualities do you think Michael Doiley has brought to it?
Michael has taken the original track into the stratosphere and created two amazing mixes. With extensive DJ and production experience, his mission is to “awaken your spirit and get it dancing like it’s never danced before” – and I’d say the track definitely does that! The remixes are a masterful combination of driving house beats, set within beautiful ethereal, evocative soundscapes.
Is there a personal connection to the theme of the track?
I wrote the original acoustic track during lockdown as an affirmation that connections continue even when we are separated – that love can go the distance. Like all of us, I was separated from many of my friends and family for long periods and this song helped me keep the faith that we would be reunited.
How have your fans reacted to the remix?
The track has not been released yet, but there’s been lots of excitement about the preview social posts – I’m lucky to have a wonderfully supportive community.
Will you be playing the remix track in your live set?
We’re hatching plans for a special live event in the summer but that’s still under wraps!
You are based in South East London – what is the creative scene like there?
Awesome – I live in Crystal Palace which has a very tight-knit, supportive creative community. There’s a long star-studded history of music making in the former Victorian Palace and Park which hosted garden parties graced by the likes of Bob Marley and James Taylor. So there’s literally music in the atmosphere! Whilst lockdown did impact the live music scene, things are now picking up again with music festivals in the park every summer. New venues such as Hopscotch Tap Rooms, host to events including Crystal Palace Jazz Club, have sprung up alongside the long-established Antenna Music Studios and multi-arts venue The Paxton Centre. There are choirs on every corner and my own Welcome Choir is based at St John the Evangelist which offers a warm welcome, stunning architecture and pin-drop acoustics, making it a sought-after concert and recording venue.
Are there any up-and-coming artists or bands that you think people should keep an eye on?
Whilst he’s an established rather emerging artist, I’d recommend tuning into the awesome new releases from my friend Randolph Matthews – he’s always been a great inspiration. GeeJay, who released their debut album last year, have a really beautiful, fresh new sound – I recently discovered them via Apple Music playlists.
Outside of music, what are some of your passions or hobbies?
Alongside singing, writing is my other main passion and I’ve always got my nose in a book, Nature is a continued source of inspiration to me, I love walking, running and hanging out in the local parks.
Can you give us a sneak peek into what’s next for Katie Rose? Is there an album on the way?
Whilst we’re focussed on this single release right now, an album is definitely in the ether!
