Decline is a terrifying horror thriller, written by Ryan Carter and Sam Mason-Bell, and directed by Sam Mason-Bell. It stars Ryan Carter, Katrina Grey, Steven Dalmon, Brittany Louise Hildreth, Russell Churcher, Jackson Batchelor, Omar Jose, Thomas Lee Rutter, and Katie Watson. Witness one man’s rapid descent into a world filled with hostility, hatred and murder.
This is an emotionally fueled rollercoaster ride of a film that explores the subject of toxic masculinity and its effects on society and mankind. Ryan Carter is absolutely fantastic in the starting role, giving one seriously memorable performance. He’s charismatic, engaging, and really sells the character. You almost forget he’s acting at times, as you’re so invested in his wicked downward spiral. The chemistry between the two main leads is undeniable and appears honest and genuine.
The film is dark, gritty, and extremely effective. However, the editing could use some work and the lighting could definitely have been better. Some of the scenes were a little hard to make out, and not very well lit. Characters tended to fade into the background in a few spots throughout. Longer cuts and wider shots could potentially eliminate some of those concerns.
What really gave the film some life though, was the music. It was creepy and intense and certainly helped set the mood. It seemed to amp up the tension and anxiety. Also, the cinematography was incredible. There were some truly gorgeous shots with excellent framing.
Decline is morally horrific and unnerving. It’s offensive, atrocious and entertaining as hell. You’ll definitely feel like a dirty bird after watching this. Just beware the psycho with a knife. It’s appalling, deranged, and shockingly original. Give it a go, if you can stomach it.
