Moon Worm was born out of necessity. Jack Schaefer grew up on a farm in rural North Dakota, loving indie rock but having no one to share his passions with. As a result, being “able to do it myself was kind of a necessity,” he admits.
We catch up with Jack for a chat about the new Moon Worn EP, Midnight Audio…
Jack, where did you get the name Moon Worm from?
It comes from the first full moon of March referred to as the “Worm Moon.” It is a sign of the springtime/new life. At first, I thought it was something funny and original as a new band name but it stuck and now it’s becoming an alter ego of mine.
What inspired your new single Midnight Audio? What is the track about?
Midnight Audio is a song I wrote when I was in a transitional phase of my life where I felt I was being pulled in di?erent directions. The feeling of not wanting to release your youthful dreams and aspirations while also being stricken with realistic expectations of what that looks like leads to the existential feeling in the song. I think it speaks to the state of mind many of us find ourselves in with modern life wondering if the choices we make are the ones that will ultimately make us happy.
Can you tell us more about the rest of the EP Midnight Audio?
“Dopamine” is a bass-driven track that lets you down at your highest and builds you up at your lowest, everything in life happens for a reason even if you may not realize why at the time. “These Games” is all about overthinking and anxiety when it comes to relationships in today’s era, an upbeat track for the nervous soul. “Meet Me There” is an upbeat synth parade that follows a thought process of expectations vs. reality.
What current bands or artists – or culture in general – are inspiring your creativity?
Finding new music is something everyone loves so I am no di?erent when it comes to hunting down new inspiration. I’ve always been a fan of M83 and their new album “Fantasy” has been a fun listen this summer. Groups like Sunbeam Sound Machine, CD Ghost, and Beach Fossils have also been consistent on my rotation lately.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
I think just the overall reception of my songs so far has been awesome to see. Especially with social media people reach out and tell me how much they enjoy what I put out is such a cool thing to hear. I love what I do and when other people become fans it’s even more fun!
What other projects do you have coming up?
My new single “Aimless” releases May 31st and is an upbeat summer jam that falls right in line with where Midnight Audio left o?. I will be releasing another music video with that one as well.
You can expect new tracks consistently through the end of the year. Working on the live show as well!
Where do you see yourself ten years from now?
Hopefully healthy and still making music wherever I am in the world! I love to travel and see new things so hopefully the world is still a friendly place and we can all enjoy this fragile gift we all call home.
