Nightmare Symphony is a 2020 Italian horror film written by Antonio Tentori, and directed by Domiziano Cristopharo and Daniele Trani. It stars Frank LaLoggia, Antonella Salvucci, Poison Rouge, Halil Budakova, and Irene Baruffetti. Life imitates art, especially when bodies begin piling up in connection with a director’s current feature thriller, A Peacock’s Tale.
This is a fantastic psychological slasher/giallo film. The cinematography is absolutely breathtaking. There’s some seriously stunning architecture and the camerawork is incredible. It’s some of the best Italian indie horror filmmaking in years. On par with the likes of Argento, Fulci and Bava.
The dialogue could use some work and the editing could have been a little tighter. However, the opening scene is so savage and brutal, it’s guaranteed to make viewers cringe with fear. The gore is excellent and the special effects are amazing. I especially liked the mask used by the killer in the film. It’s truly terrifying.
What really stood out though, was the acting, music and score. Frank LaLoggia was mesmerizing and really delivered in his first-ever lead role in a feature. He was subtle, charming and a bit unsettling. The music and score are otherworldly and do a remarkable job of adding a sense of unease and dread to the film. It’s brilliant and haunting.
Nightmare Symphony: A Peacock’s Tale is elegant, stylish and sadistic. Like a kiss in the dark. A must-see masterpiece. One of the year’s best indie horror flicks. A worthy tribute to the legendary godfather of gore, Lucio Fulci. Definitely check this one out if you get the chance.
