We seem to be getting a stack of horror movies hitting the big screen lately such as Abigail and the latest in the line of films that will claim to scare you is Tarot.
When a group of friends recklessly violates the sacred rule of Tarot readings never use someone else’s deck they unknowingly unleash an unspeakable evil trapped within the cursed cards. One by one, they come face to face with fate and end up in a race against death to escape the future foretold in their readings.
I went into Tarot not knowing that much and I hadn’t seen the trailer so I was intrigued with the description of the film and hoped for some scares or at least some of those moments when my spine tingled, sadly this is another of the modern day horror films that don’t give you any of that and it plays on those film tropes that we all expect from horror films these days. The loud noises, something in the background or a strange figure/creature coming out of the darkness.
What we have with Tarot is a film that has that Final Destination vibe, it’s not death that is hunting down the Gen Zs this time, but more a curse that has been invited by the ancient deck of cards that most of us would take one look at and say, “There is no damn way I’m going anywhere near them!”.
You’ve probably seen something similar many times, but if you are one of those who can’t cope with horror films and jumps at the slightest thing, you may be up for being scared. Sadly, I wasn’t overly impressed with the lack of scares. That being said though, I did like the way that the deaths of the characters were done, with each being done in the style of the Tarot card that was drawn while the readings were done.
One thing that did stand out for me was the soundtrack from Joseph Bishara, if the name sounds familiar he was the composer for a few movies in The Conjuring franchise and Insidious. Some great uptempo tracks lift the atmosphere of the film, but sadly the soundtrack doesn’t save it from being a little lacklustre when it comes to taking us on a terrifying cinematic journey into fear.
