I have to say that Rise of the Footsoldier: Origins is not usually the sort of film that you would find me in a cinema watching and although I have seen the first movie in the franchise, the trailer from Signature Entertainment with legendary Vinnie Jones and Terry Stone got me intrigued for the new movie.
The latest in the Footsoldier franchise takes us back to the 80s where we find down-on-his-luck Tony Tucker (Terry Stone) getting a job as a nightclub bouncer after he saves the owner’s grandson, now Tony has ambitions to rise to the top of the game no matter the costs and who gets hurt on the way.
Terry teams up with Essex heavyweight Bernard O’Mahoney (Vinnie Jones) at the height of the 1980s rave scene, Tucker gets a voracious appetite for money, drugs and a glamorous lifestyle soon develops, fueling his growingly audacious ventures and seeing him join forces with Pat Tate (Craig Fairbrass) and Craig Rolfe (Roland Manookian) to capitalise on the drug boom.
Rise of the Footsoldier: Origins doesn’t hold back on the brutality of its violence or for that matter its language with plenty of F-Bombs and the C-Word, which those that have seen the first film will know it’s the language of the characters and their world.

Director by Nick Nevern (director and star of The Hooligan Factory and star of popular BBC comedy series Motherland), who co-wrote the script with producer Andrew Loveday, has certainly brought a fantastic feel for the 80s in the movie, not only the clothes and cars but there is an amazing soundtrack that kicks out some top tunes throughout the whole of the movie, featuring tracks which many of us grew up with back in the 80s will know from just a few bars.
Footsoldier Origins is packed with brutal fights and a story of revenge and being an origin story it also brings the Rise of the Footsoldier franchise full circle while tackling many of the previous movie’s unanswered questions.
The movie doesn’t;t take any prisoners when it comes to the violence, but I have to say I love the subtle touches of comedic moments and one scene which had almost everyone laughing during my screening was a moment when Craig (Manookian) changes his accent to disguise who he is and the look on Tony’s face was priceless.
As I mentioned earlier this isn’t the sort of film I would normal head out to see at the cinema but with Lock, Stock and Snatch superstar Vinnie Jones teaming up with premiere acting veteran Keith Allen (Kingsman, Shallow Grave) for the movie, it’s a brutal account of how real-life, hard-as-nails Falklands War veteran Tony Tucker came to be involved in one of the most notorious gangland murders in British history.
As well as Jones, outstanding as fearsome doorman Bernard O’Mahoney, and Allen as formidable nightclub owner Dave Simms, the film also features some of the cream of the crop of British actors including Craig Fairbrass (Muscle) – returning as notorious drug-dealer Pat Tate – P.H.Moriarty from The Long Good Friday, Billy Murray (Eastenders), Michelle Collins (Eastenders), George Russo (Top Dog), the brilliant Roland Manookian (RocknRolla), a genius cameos from reality TV royalty Chris Hughes and the late and great Heavy D.

This movie is certainly a guys film and I did feel a little out of place in a screening with nothing but testosterone around me, but seeing the movie on the big screen was well worth it. If you are a fan of the Rise of the Footsoldier franchise then this is certainly a movie that you will want to see on the big screen, but once the film ends stay for the end credits or you will miss out on the post-credits.
