A short while back we brought the news of the new movie Sideshow today we bring you a review of the new movie starring Les Dennis (Extras, Coronation Street) and Anthony Head (Ted Lasso, Little Britain), the movie from Munro Film has a star-studded comedy, Sideshow, which will be coming to cinemas across the UK from 11th March & available on Digital Download 21st March!
Sideshow follows two criminals who after breaking into the home of a washed-up psychic (Dennis), get much more than they bargained for, because ‘The All-Seeing Stupendo’ is a genuine master of the dark mystic arts – at least that’s what it says on his poster and he’s sticking to it…
The movie opens up with Pendrick (Dennis) performing to an audience in a theatre, only for things to start to go a little wrong, once the performance has finished he returns to his dressing room while the disgruntled audience confronts his manager (Head) about how disgusting the show was and the comic moment when a lady asks him, “what is felching anyway”, I have to admit I had to Google that myself!
Once Pendrick leaves he is followed by the two criminals Eva (April Pearson, Skins) and Dom (Nathan Clarke, Alex Rider) to his home, where they break into the house and proceed to look for something, but they certainly don’t know what they have gotten themselves into in the house of the ‘The All-Seeing Stupendo’.
The humour in Sideshow certainly has a large amount of Black Humour, Les Dennis’ has some great comic lines that are very British, director/writer Adam Oldroyd has certainly put together a quintessentially British comedy that has some great moments that had me laughing out loud.
There is more to the story than just two criminals breaking into a house as we delve deeper into the movie we learn more about the characters and why they are there, with plenty of twists and turns throughout the movie it keeps you on your toes and a final twist that will catch a lot of people by surprise.
I thoroughly enjoyed Sideshow, Les Dennis is brilliant as ‘The All-Seeing Stupendo’ as he plays on the minds of Eva and Dom, look out for the scene with the three of them contacting the dead, which is both comical and unnerving at the same time as they believe him to be a fraud, but is he really a psychic or is he just very well at playing on peoples emotions!
The definitions of words throughout the Sideshow are a nice touch that breaks the movie into chapters that work nicely, the cinematography also looks very good as most of the production happens at night the lighting is well done that you get the key elements that you need to see in the darkness with the blackness all around and it looks great.
Commenting on the release writer & director Adam Oldroyd said “Sideshow is my modern take on the black humour of the old Ealing comedies. Les was the perfect pick to play ageing psychic Stuart Pendrick, his years of experience as one of the nation’s best-loved entertainers was the ideal material to draw from”
Producer Michael Riley also commented on the film’s upcoming theatrical release saying: “Featuring a brilliant, touching and tragicomic career-best central performance from entertainment legend Les Dennis, Sideshow gives UK audiences a chance to shake off those pandemic blues. It’s a hilarious, perfectly-pitched and thoroughly silly way to spend 90mins, and shouldn’t be missed.“
