The Southend-on-Sea Film Festival is recognised as one of the most prestigious UK events for filmmakers and will be returning in May for its 11th Year, for what’s looks to be the biggest event yet. Bringing together a strong diverse range of independent films which have been specially selected from around the world, it gives both the audience an opportunity to see films which they would not normally get to see on the big screen.
The festival begins on Thursday 23rd May with the Opening Gala film Under the Radar: The Mike Edmonds Story Extended Cut. Simon J. Frith originally planned the film to be a short intimate documentary about actor Mike Edmonds but following the success on the festival circuit this has now been expanded into this full feature-length film.
With featured in stage plays, TV and films including; Time Bandits, Return of the Jedi, and the Harry Potter franchise Mike has had a varied career. Telling the story in his own words and those that know him, includes contributions from Colin Firth, Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin, Danny John Jules, Star Wars producer Robert Watts and crime author Mark Billingham who discuss his incredible career.
In addition to the main feature the new short In Two Minds will also be making its premier at the festival. A film which deals with mental depression, it tells the story of a rookie police officer who is thrown into a compromising position with a troubled man who is willing to stop at nothing. The film will be introduced by director David Streames and lead actor Darren Kent.
The remaining festival will be running from Friday 24th May to Monday 28th May, with a variety of themed films running throughout the day, which will also include several filmmakers who will be in attendance to introduce their films.

“It may be a bit of a cliché but I do believe there’s something for everyone in this year’s programme. From documentaries to gritty beat-em-up movies, heroes of cinema to award-winning films from around the world, the Festival represents almost every aspect of movie making.
Of course, at the Festival’s heart is the opportunity to see new work by leading independent filmmakers covering a broad range of themes, subjects and genres. These elements are what makes the Festival very special and essential viewing for all kinds of movie fans.”
