Super Charlie is Bright, Colourful and Fun – Review

In a cinematic smorgasbord littered with literally dozens and dozens of superhero movies, it can be hard to find something really unique that still gives levels of familiarity. Super Charlie is a fun children’s film about a baby getting superpowers, and it feels just different enough to avoid superhero fatigue.

The animation in the film is really good. The digital animation works in a way to make it feel like stop motion at times. This might sound like the digital was sketchy and there was something wrong, but it was effective enough that at times I was looking around the characters to see around the models at 3D aspects that weren’t there.

One of the big points of this film, which will resonate with a lot of people, is what happens to the youngest child when he becomes the middle child. Willie faces the struggles of becoming the invisible, not listened to, middle child when his baby brother Charlie comes along. It affects the way he behaves for the rest of the film, and it adds a surprisingly deep touch to what could have been just a simple, funny film.

This is most definitely a film aimed at the younger side of the cinema audiences, and it’s great for it. It’s bright and colourful. It tells a simple story, and it tells it well. It doesn’t tread any new ground. Everything in it has been seen before, but it weaves all of the classic tropes together into a fabric that works really well.

Overall. This isn’t a movie that’s going to crack all-time top 10 lists in any way, but I can easily see this becoming a steady watch in a lot of homes and could see it being the favourite film for lots of people. It’s bright, colourful, fun and resonates on levels that a lot of films for the same audiences simply don’t.

I had a lot more fun watching it than I expected to, and for that reason I’m giving it a 3.5/5…
