The Conjuring 3 The Devil Made Me Do It is the latest in the Conjuring Universe franchise and see the return of Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) as they take on a demon in the 1980s that is out for souls!
Probably one of the most sensational cases from their files, it starts with a fight for the soul of a young boy, then takes them beyond anything they’d ever seen before, to mark the first time in U.S. history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defence.
I remember back in 2013 when I was first introduced to the Warren’s in the first movie, it was one of those films that actually made me jump and my skin crawl, remember that scene with the rotting legs hanging from the tree! Since then we have had several spin-offs and two Conjuring movies, now the third film brings us to 1981 and it opens up with one heck of an exorcism with fantastic use of the cinema speaker system to throw sound all around you, something that continues throughout the film to pull you into the moments!
The Conjuring movies have always been ones that work with the jump scares and The Devil Made Me Do It does have some of those moments, but I’m not sure whether it is me be used to how they play out or they just aren’t as scary as the previous movies, but there are scenes that make your hair stand up on the back of your neck.
As the Warrens try to figure out what the demon is and why it is attached to Arne (Ruairi O’Connor) and try to prove his innocence to save him from the death penalty they have many of those spooky moments with plenty of shadowy scenes and demon possessions.
But for me The Conjuring 3 just didn’t seem to have the humph that its predecessors had, I remember seeing The Conjuring 2 in the cinema back in 2016 and there were people jumping and some screaming, nothing like that with the third instalment, rather just a few sharp intakes of breath with the creepy scenes.
It has been mentioned that The Devil Made Me Do It could be the last in The Conjuring films with spin-offs such as The Nun 2 and the long-awaited The Crooked Man carrying on the Conjuring Universe, so it’s no doubt that we will see Wilson and Farmiga reprising their roles again at some point.
If you are a fan of the movies then you will enjoy the nostalgia of the genre, but don’t expect those screams. For me, this movie is more akin to The Nun than the first two movies, but it’s not the worst in the Conjuring Universe, it’s just great to see the characters back on the big screen again, heck it’s nice to be back at the cinema to see a film on the big screen.
