The Host is a film directed by Andy Newbery (Keeping Faith, Morfydd), and produced by Zachary Weckstein (our of the shadows, Kingfish).
Mike Beckingham (Redwood, Black Site) stars as Robert, and Dougie Poynter(McFly, IACGMOOH) as Steven (Roberts Brother) in this thriller, crime, mystery film. Robert is a London banker and is fed up of working the everyday grind. Robert risks it all by taking the banks money. This leads Robert into a dilemma, and into a world, he could not have imagined, and one that he wasn’t prepared for at all.
This film partially involves the world of the Triads, involving drugs, money and deceit. But this film has the added bonus of a twist or two.
The film also stars Derek Jacobi, as Dr Hobson, and although he is really only in the film at the beginning and at the end, he does say quite a few meaningful quotes towards the mystery character who is in the chair in his office at the beginning of the film. The mystery is you don’t know who is in that chair until the end of the film, and you question yourself throughout the film who it could be. I found with this film that where I thought the film was going didn’t actually go in that direction, which shows how superbly written this has been.
There are a few mysteries in this film, like who’s in the chair at the beginning of the film? Who is Vera Tribbe? And why do we not see Vera Tribbe’s father, but we hear his voice?
I will say there are a couple of twists in the story, and that is what had me glued to the screen.
I don’t want to give any of the story away, but I will say it is a must see film. Although this film was a little slow to start, it definitely delivered in the thriller and mystery genre.
Mike Beckingham and Dougie Poynter, who play brothers (Robert and Steven) play their roles extremely well, and do get into their characters. But I have to say the one character that really stuck out for me, was actress Maryam Hassouni, and she plays the character of Vera Tribbe. Once you have watched the film, you will see why. Again I don’t want to disclose much about her character. Amazing.
I would rate this film as a 4 out of 5 stars, and it is only because it was a little slow to start, but otherwise a great film.
