After seeing the brilliant Dream Scenario recently I thought it was time to check out the new Blu-ray release of The Retirement Plan also starring Nicolas Cage, but would the film be as good as the bizarre film that had Cage in everyone’s dreams?
Ashley and her young daughter get involved with some dangerous people, putting their lives at risk. When things start to spiral out of control, Ashley reaches out to her estranged father Matt for help. Matt, who is now a retired beach bum living in the Cayman Islands, is forced to put his past career as a hitman to use in order to save his daughter and granddaughter from danger.
Having some great names in the cast certainly grabbed my attention for this one. Not only do we get Nicolas Cage bringing some slightly subdued Cage Rage but we also get Ron Perlman, Jackie Earle Haley and Ernie Hudson.
There are some great comedic moments in the film but don’t expect another movie like The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, we still get some great “cage-rage” moments with Cage coming across with some nice moments of going up some of the bad guys, but The Retirement Plan just seems to lack that little something that makes it a great film.
I did enjoy the film but there were some moments where it did seem to drag along about, thankfully those moments were made up for with some great shots with the cinematography of the Island scenes that are so vibrant and colourful, which certainly makes the film look good.
The Retirement Plan isn’t as good as Dream Scenario but it’s not a terrible movie to watch.
