At just 17, Scottish singer?songwriter and multi?instrumentalist Zack Gibson is fast becoming one of the most exciting new voices in Scotland’s acoustic pop wave. Raised in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, Zack’s clean, melodic songwriting and emotionally open storytelling have already earned him early acclaim — from standing ovations at under?18s songwriting camps to studio sessions with Kyle Falconer and producer Andy Gannon.
A natural performer with a maturity beyond his years, Zack has been building momentum across Scotland’s live circuit, supporting Kyle Falconer, Cammy Barnes and most recently The Bootleg Beatles, while making an international debut at MiCannes Music Festival. Now, with industry backing from Riverman Bangkok and Future Sonic Collective, he’s stepping into his breakout moment.
Zack’s debut single “Figure It Out” is out now — a vibrant, uplifting track about choosing your own path and rising above life’s knocks. With his blend of heartfelt honesty and hook?driven songwriting, he’s a young artist with serious potential and a story that’s only just beginning.
We caught up with Zack for a Q&A to talk early beginnings, songwriting, live shows and the journey behind “Figure It Out.”
Welcome, Zack! You have a new single out, “Figure It Out”. Tell us about it and what inspired it.
“‘Figure It Out’ is about taking your own path and not letting other people’s decisions or opinions steer your life. I wanted to write about something people could relate to, because everyone has times when they’re trying to work out what’s right for them. It’s got a good energy to it, and I’m really excited that it’s out now.”
If you could only eat one Scottish snack for the rest of your life, what are you choosing?
“Scottish tablet, definitely. It’s so good, and I don’t think I’d get bored of it.”
What’s the most chaotic thing that’s ever happened to you at a gig?
“I once brought the wrong mic stand, so I had to tie my mic on with a shoelace. It worked, somehow! I’ve learned to double-check my gear before I leave now.”
If you had to form a supergroup with three other Scottish artists, who’s in it and what’s it called?
“Lewis Capaldi, Paolo Nutini and Fat Bastard from Austin Powers—I know he’s not an artist, but he’d bring something to the band! We’d be called ‘Teckle’.”
What’s your most unpopular music opinion?
“Noel Gallagher is the best songwriter of the last 50 years. I know not everyone will agree, but his songs are hard to beat.”
If your life had a theme tune, what would it be?
“‘Roll with It’ by Oasis. It’s a good song to live by as well—just keep going and see what happens.”
What’s the weirdest place you’ve ever written a lyric?
“On the toilet. Sometimes an idea just comes to you at the strangest time!”
If you could swap lives with any musician for a day, who would you pick and why?
“Robbie Williams. He’s had such a mad career and must have some amazing stories. It’d be interesting to see what a day in his life is actually like.”
What’s your go-to karaoke song—and how dramatic does it get?
“‘Valerie’. I’d definitely get into it and probably sing it like I’m on stage at a massive gig.”
If you had a pet that matched your music style, what animal would it be?
“My dog Luca. He’s got his own personality, and I reckon he’d fit right in.”
What’s one thing your fans would be shocked to learn about you?
“I was an extra in a film called Schemers. You might have to look carefully to spot me!”
