Ghostface makes another return to the big screen, but this time the knife-wielding serial killer is in New York for Scream VI a movie that certainly takes the franchise and twists it again to bring so much familiar along with something a little new to keep your attention.
It doesn’t seem that long ago since our last visit from Ghostface when we were in the cinema in January for a 4DX outing with the cast returning, now with Scream VI there are several familiar faces from the Scream Franchise as the new movie follows on from Scream (2022) but moves from Woodsbroro to New York which did remind me a bit of Jason Takes Manhattan, but this time it’s Ghostface Slices and Dices New York!

Scream VI follows a year later from the last movie with half-sisters Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara (Jenna Ortega) getting on with life after their traumatic experience in Woodsboro that involved the return of Ghostface. tara is coping well and has a circle of close friends at college in New York City, but Sam is struggling to adjust to a similar lifestyle as she tries to process the crimes from her father, Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich).

But not everyone goes well for long as the sister relationship is thrown into turmoil as a new, more vicious, Ghostface begins killing their friends, making things even worse for Sam is the internet conspiracy theorists that connect Sam to the crimes, claiming that she framed Richie Kirsch (jack Quaid) for the murders that happened in Woodsboro.
Sometimes we have so many movies coming in a franchise that you can easily get bored with them, but with the Scream franchise we did have a nice gap between movies and although Scream VI follows closely after last year’s movie, it’s great to see that the sixth outing has stepped it up a tad and kept the franchise fresh. The movie is brutal when it comes to Ghostface’s attacks and the blood certainly splatters everywhere, I can only imagine what the movie is like in 3D 4DX, that may be an addition to this review at some point if I can get the chance to squeeze it in.

I remember seeing the first Scream movie in the cinema when it first came out and it was a bit of a game-changer, this latest movie did give me the same feeling of excitement that I got from the original movie, the rules have changed in Scream VI and that’s what makes the movie something that could become tiresome but still has you on the edge of your seat and for those with a nervous disposition the chance to jump out of their seats.
With the story moving to New York it gives the writers the chance to try something different with the locations, rather than in the location of Woodsboro, like the previous movies there are plenty of twists and turns throughout the movie to keep you guessing who Ghostface is, it certainly had me hooked and although I did work it out before the reveal, it’s still a great twist on the character.

It’s great to see the return of characters from the Scream Franchise and in particular, we get the return of Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere). Kirby was introduced to us in Scream 4 (2011), now she is an FBI agent and she is a specialist on the Ghostface killers. Along with Panettiere, Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) is back again. Let’s face it, it wouldn’t be a Scream movie without Gale Weather.
Sadly there it’s a no-show for Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Campbell said that she would not return for the sixth instalment in the franchise as intended due to the low sum offered to her to reprise the role. Campbell said that she “felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise,” but she did thank Scream fans for everything that “this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.“

Scream VI is certainly a great return to the franchise and if you are a fan of the movies then this is certainly one to check on the big screen.
