It’s been 27 years since our first meeting with Tom Crusie’s Ethan Hunt and 5 years since the last Mission Impossible film, but after what has seemed like forever we are now brought the latest movie in the franchise with Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One IMAX in a 163 minute spectacular that for me is the best in the franchise (so far).
In Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team embark on their most dangerous mission yet: To track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future and the world’s fate at stake, and dark forces from Ethan’s past closing in, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan must consider that nothing can matter more than his mission – not even the lives of those he cares about most.
As with all the Mission Impossible movies the start of the film really sets you up for what’s to come and it is a little unexpected, to say the least, a Russian submarine with new technology is making its way through the water and it’s been getting past most of the security of the world and not being picked up thanks to the technology that is going to become something that maybe some of us fear, A.I. (Artificial Intelligence).
But as with any action movie, things really don’t go to plan and this is the premise for the two-part film that we get to see part one of this year and part two in June 2024.
Ethan (Cruise) and his team Benji (Simon Pegg) and Luther (Ving Rhames) are up against a ruthless power and they also have a new colleague to work along with them as Hayley Atwell plays Grace who is a thief that gets herself into something deeper than she could have ever imagined.
There is plenty of action-packed into Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One as well as an intertwining story with lots of twists and turns that make this one of the best films in the franchise. The cast is fantastic and as always Cruise certainly wows his with those death-defying stunts and set pieces that have you on the edge of your seat, especially the motorbike jump which looks impressive and then you see it on an IMAX screen and OMG!
Simon Pegg is brilliant as Benji and brings so many great comedic moments that break up the tension, he also works well off Ving Rhames as the two work together on the tech stuff etc. It’s great to have Rebecca Furgason back as Ilsa, always love her character, plus a return of Vennsa Kirby as The White Widow.
As I mentioned earlier Hayley Atwell has now joined the franchise as well and I really loved how her character was built up throughout the movie, a real joy to watch her performance with the rest of the cast that we have come to know in the franchise.
A character that I really loved to hate in Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One is Paris played by Pom Klementieff, if you think she looks familiar then you may recognise her as Mantis in Guardians of the Galaxy. I really enjoyed the slight craziness that she put into the character, look out for a car chase in Rome and see how she brings a crazed look to the role, it just works so brilliantly, I would have loved to have seen more from the character as Paris was so much fun to watch.
Director Christopher McQuarrie has brought us another exciting, action-packed, movie that keeps you glued to every moment of the movie that not only looks great on the IMAX screen with some amazing cinematography and production that takes you to the far-off places that the team have to go to. Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One in IMAX also has some stunning sound that has been optimised for IMAX screens, the explosions really boom and you feel the base through your seat from the powerful IMAX speakers, you also pick up on the subtle sounds in quiet scenes.
The original score by Lorne Balfe (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Ambulance) for the movie sounds amazing and they just work so perfectly for the action sequences and the more subdued moments that need to bring some emotions to the scenes. Such a joy to listen to and a soundtrack that is on my list to get hold of.
Does Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One have scenes in IMAX E.A.R?
Sadly the movie doesn’t have any Expanded Aspect Ratio scenes with the movie being in widescreen from start to finish, but don’t let this put you off from seeing it in IMAX, the optimisation of the picture and sound makes up for it and you are still seeing the movie of a huge screen which is well worth seeing.
Does Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One have any post-credit scenes?
You can sit through the credits and enjoy the amazing music, but there are no post-credit scenes in Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One, not even a teaser for Part Two.
Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One in IMAX has the longest runtime in the series of films so far with it clocking in at 163 minutes, but for me, it certainly didn’t feel like almost 3 hours long and it was a great rollercoaster ride of a movie.
Now all we have to do is wait until June the 28th 2024 for the conclusion of Part One with Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part Two.
