Exclusive Horror-on-Sea interview with ‘Rooster’ Writer-Director Andre Harrison

Name: HorrorScopes Volume 2: Chinese Zodiac ‘Rooster’

Directors: Andre Harrison

Writers: Andre Harrison

Starring: Catherine Mieses, Mireia Espluga, Morten Fausboll, Andre Harrison

Confident, handsome and well-established businessman Charlie, can’t believe his luck when he is approached by two beautiful girls, Blue and Red, on his way back from work who invite him back to theirs for a night of intense fun. Little does he know the girl’s idea of fun involves wine, drugs and a human-size rooster.

In a new exclusive interview on Blazing Minds leading up to the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival, I got a chance to ask writer-director Andre Harrison a few questions about his segment of HorrorScopes Volume 2: Chinese Zodiac – ‘Rooster’

HorrorScopes Volume 2: Chinese Zodiac has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea film festival on Friday 19th January at 20:00pm.

Q. You contributed a segment film to HorrorScopes Volume 2 which has been selected to play at Horror-on-Sea Film Festival. Can you tell us about the segment?

A. Sure, Rooster walks a fine line between dark comedy and horror. Rooster was definitely not the sign I had hoped for (though I love it now) but it’s definitely the most unique and feel we achieved just that with our film.

Q. What were some of your influences when writing the script for Rooster?

A. When accepting to do the film I knew I had Catherine and Mireia on board and knew they had amazing chemistry so wanted to give them a platform with dialogue to show this to an audience and there’s no better dialogue writer than Quentin Tarantino, in my opinion, so definitely was influenced by him a little.

Q. What were some of your influences for the look and style of the film?

A. I definitely wanted to keep a Tarantino vibe in terms of dialogue and flow but being a horror
director, I’ve not touched upon a slasher film yet so definitely influenced by a few slasher movies,
Friday The 13th (1980) being one.

Q. Did you make any changes from the original script during filming?

A. Not really. Rooster came to me quite late in the process and as I was on another film at the time
we had about a month to film and deliver but again with the dialogue and cast who all nailed it with
grace there was not much to change. Maybe the shot list was smaller as I held onto their
performances more than originally intended.

Q. What were some of your favourite moments during filming?

A. I don’t want to give away the ending but wearing a rooster outfit and making rooster sounds with
Morten (Charlie) in the bathroom will not be forgotten any time soon.

Q. Did you experience any issues during filming?

A. Apart from not charging the batteries for the camera all went well.

Q. What makes Rooster stand out as something different in the horror genre?

A. I would say the dialogue and its pace. It leads you to believe it is another type of film until the
shock ending. A bit like From Dusk till Dawn (1996).

Q. What do you hope people take away after watching the film?

A. Don’t follow people home. No matter how attractive and tempting the offer may seem.

Q. Do you have any other projects which you are currently working on?

A. Yeah, currently I’ve finished my second feature. A horror called ‘Midnight Perturbation’ which is
about to go into distribution. We’re making a short film based off H.G WellsInvisible Man’ in March
and slowly prepping to write the sequel for ‘Midnight Perturbation 2’.

Q. If someone was looking to get into filmmaking what advice would you give them

A. Don’t lol Honestly, just make sure you’re in it for the right reasons and know that it is a long road
with no guarantees. Enjoy and learn all aspects of the process and treat others as you would like to
be treated and ultimately have fun.
