Filmed in a style that is heavily reminiscent of the recent Paw Patrol outings, this is a solid entry into the children’s animated Christmas movie catalogue. It’s the story of a young girl called Billie who is set to see the premiere of a movie sequel in a series about Super Klaus, a mall Santa that gets superpowers. She has tickets for her and her parents but winds up giving them to a friend who doesn’t have much, knowing she won’t be able to go.
At the same time, Santa bangs his head and becomes Super Klaus after seeing him on the TV. Then he finds his way to Billie’s city and starts interacting with the world, and all of Super Klaus’s fans. This is a wonderful combination of superhero movies, Christmas and animation. There is an evil Executive and suit-up scenes, as well as Elves and friendship and family drama.
This is very much a film for the same audiences as the Paw Patrol movies. It’s for younger children and the families that they’ll go with. That’s not to say it can’t be enjoyed by anyone older. I sat through it and thoroughly enjoyed it, finding moments of humour that younger folks will probably miss.
The film looks good and has a consistent style throughout. Oddly I need to bring this up because some animated films I’ve seen recently have been made with mixed styles that don’t always gel that well. The directors and animators of this have done a decent job at making a film that works well and looks great.
Overall, this is a decent movie with a fun Christmas/superhero crossover story. The film within the film is a threequel in a successful franchise, but does that mean the film itself would need a sequel in the future? Honestly, I think this works fine as a standalone movie and doesn’t need a follow-up. For me though this gets a 3/5, and a recommendation for younger families to check it out.
