In a new exclusive interview on Blazing Minds ahead of the film’s Blu-Ray release from 101 Films, I got a chance to ask actor Darren James King a few questions about his role in the award-winning British vengeance thriller ‘Derelict‘ from Director Jonathan Zaurin.
Q: Following a successful festival run, your film Derelict is now getting a Blu–Ray release. Can you tell me a little bit about what we can expect from the film?
A: There’s nothing quiet about Derelict, despite being shot in the peaceful and beautiful Herefordshire countryside, it’s loud in all the right places. As big as it is in certain moments, it’s the subtle undercurrent that really packs the biggest punch. It’s a hard-hitting film that keeps you pinned from start to finish.
Q: You play Kal in the film. How did you get involved, and what attracted you to the character?
A: Like many indie productions, chance and relationships played a big part. I’d been speaking with Jonathan for a while, and he mentioned he might have something for me—but by the time things lined up, I was a little late to the project and only a smaller part was available.
But I’m a firm believer there’s no such thing as small roles; it’s all about what you bring to it. The real gold is often in the unsaid. For me, it’s about who I’m making the film with—that’s the most important thing.
What drew me to Kal was the creative freedom Jonathan gave me to shape the character. I wanted to build someone layered and unhinged—someone you can’t quite get a handle on. Keeping the audience at a distance from him makes him more intriguing and the film more engaging.
Q: What sort of preparation did you do for the role, and are there any elements of the character that reflect your own personality?
A: Honestly, I don’t over-prepare. That kind of work can feel a bit too clean. For me, it’s about finding truth—and that’s enough groundwork. I switch off that inner awareness, and I just am. No second-guessing.
That’s why I spend time early on asking the director questions before I even come on board—so I know exactly what I’m stepping into and how much space I have to play. Once that’s clear, it’s all signed off in my mind, and I go full in.
And I never just make it up. Everything has to connect to something real—whether it’s part of me or something I know. That’s where conviction comes from. Audiences can smell dishonesty a mile off.
Q: What were some of your favourite moments while making the film?
A: There’s something powerful about shooting in real environments—you’re fully immersed, with nothing between you and the world you’re in. It strips away pretence.
Working alongside a passionate cast and crew, all driven more by heart than budget, made the experience even more rewarding. That collective spirit—everyone pulling in the same direction—is what indie filmmaking is all about.
Q: Did you experience any challenges during the shoot?
A: Honestly, it was one of the best experiences of my career. I was well looked after, surrounded by serious talent, working with a lovely, family-oriented team, and had the room to do what I do. A real blessing

Q: What do you hope people will take away after watching Derelict?
A: Honestly? That’s not for me to say. It’s personal—everyone will take something different from it.
All I hope is that people remember it’s a piece of cinema made with heart. Just because something has stark elements doesn’t mean it should be judged harshly. No one involved made it with anything but the best intentions. That’s important to keep in mind.
Q: Do you have any other projects you’re currently working on?
A: Jonathan is currently writing Derelict 2, which is centred entirely around my character—Kal takes the lead this time. We’re just talking money now… and as I’m quite expensive these days (haha)
I’ve stayed active on both sides of the camera. Keeping that indie spirit alive—balancing acting with development work—keeps me sharp. It makes you more aware, more generous, and ultimately more valuable on set. Film is so much more than just acting—it’s a collective craft.
Q: If someone is looking to get into acting, what advice would you give them?
A: First—and this is key—embrace collaboration. Indie film isn’t about fame or big budgets; it’s about telling honest stories in creative environments with people who care.
Build real relationships in your community. Study human behaviour. Work on your craft every day. Don’t wait for perfect conditions to create something. Start small, hustle with heart, and remember: it’s not about the budget—it’s about the intention, the story, and the effort you pour in. Make the audience believe it. That’s a great place to start.
