Street Trash will be playing at Horror-on-Sea on Friday 16th January at 22:30hrs.
Q. Your film Street Trash has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival. Can you tell us what we can expect?
A. Homage to 80s B-Movie cinema all practical effects all in camera, multi coloured gore and goo. Shot on 35mm. With a lot of fun characters.
Q. You co-wrote the script with James C. Williamson. IN addition to the original film, what were some of your inspirations when writing the script and what was your process for writing together?
A. I was a kid in the 80’s so all my references and love for film basically comes from 70’s and 80’s cinema. I came up with a story and then we started working out the breakdown of the beats throughout the film, We work pretty quick and bounced ideas off each other. Which is always great.
Q. What were some of your influences for the look and style of the film?
A. Brazil (1985), Warriors (1979), Escape from New York (1981), was all about finding those right locations. We had a lot of great ones, sadly we were the last people to shoot at some of the locations in the film as they have knocked it down since.
Q. Did you make any changes from the original script during filming?
A. Sometimes you never know when you are going to make a film and start filming. So when I heard I started working on the script a month before and changed up a lot of things. Then there’s always that feeling when you shoot that you get those new ideas and you’re in that world, which I love. Which happened a lot.
Q. What were some of your favourite moments during filming?
A. We had a blast making this film, working with Joe Vaz and Sean Cameron Michael was my favourite as I always wanted to shoot a film with them. But the was a lot of cool action sequences and watching all the melt scenes and getting it right was very cool.
Q. Did you experience any issues during filming?
A. The shoot ran pretty smooth, we had a few problems with prosthetics were we had to re set or make a plan because the pressure thing stopped working for shooting out blood. But besides that we had a amazing team every department was great.
Q. What makes Street Trash stand out as something different in the horror genre?
A. I always try to make something that I can say this film is this, it is what it is. This film is homage to 80’s B-movie cinema, films I watched when I was a kid. I don’t think we get a lot of those films anymore. So I think we ticked all those boxers. Its a fun goo gore melt film.
Q. What do you hope people take away after watching the film?
A. Just have fun don’t take it too seriously as the film doesn’t take it self seriously. Watch it with friends late at night. And appreciate the love for that love of B-movies from the 80’s.
Q. Do you have any other projects which you are currently working on?
A. I have a few in the pipe line, One film that’s in post ‘Method Madness‘”‘ Very different to what I’ve done before it stars Gary Green (Fried Barry (2020)).
Q. If someone was looking to write and direct their own film what advice would you give them?
A. Nike got it right “Just do it!” Don’t wait for anyone, Don’t wait for money, Jus go out there with the friends that love cinema the same as you and come to gather and make something with pure passion and creativity and love.
