In a new exclusive interview on Blazing Minds, I got a chance to ask Director Brenden Hubbard a few questions about his film ‘Hide’, which has been selected to play at Horror-on-Sea on Sunday, 18th January at 15:00hrs.
Q. Your film ‘Hide’ has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival. Can you tell us what we can expect from the film?
A. The film centres around a father and daughter who are forced to live in the same routine every day so they can remain safe from the monster that stalks the community. It’s by no means a shocking slasher film, but more of an exploration of a fear of questioning the world around you.
Q. What were some of your influences for the look and style of the film?
A. For this film, I was really inspired by Poltergeist (1982) for the lighting style, with a touch of A Quiet Place (2018) in terms of living in the silence.
Q. What were some of your favourite moments during filming?
A. For me, it was getting to collaborate with all my filmmaking friends on a project I was directing versus producing. Also, the happy accident of casting two incredibly talented humans, with Alejandro Rose-Garcia playing the father and Ionia Olivia-Nieves playing the daughter.
Q. Did you experience any issues during filming?
A. Beyond the usual stressful issues that come with indie filmmaking, this was actually one of my favourite sets and insanely well run.
Q. What makes Hide stand out as something different in the horror genre?
A. The aim with this film was to create a proof of concept for a larger world that my writer Brian Barnes and myself have been building with our prequel script Riverbend. We wanted to leave the audience asking us about the unknown, which leaves the film less revealing than most modern horror.
Q. What do you hope people take away after watching the film?
A. I’d like an audience to leave the theatre inspired to continue on and not be afraid of what’s outside of the closet in this case.
Q. Do you have any other projects which you are currently working on?
A. Yes, I have a feature script that takes place in the same world as Hide. For the prequel, it will deal with the origin of the monster and give me answers to why the family lives the way they do.
Q. If someone were looking to direct their own film, what advice would you give them?
A. Do as much pre-production on the film as possible and be eager and confident in your decisions on set.
