So the first film review in my back to back today was Gambit, a crime caper staring Cameron Diaz and Colin Firth, but the question I had after seeing the trailer was would this Coen brothers comedy be any good, bearing in mind that it is a remake of the 1966 film of the same name starring Shirley MacLaine and Michael Caine.
Harry Deane (Colin Firth) is a bit disgruntled with his boss (Alan Rickman) and plans to take revenge on him by selling him a fake Monet painting with the help of the Major (Tom Courtenay) and PJ Puznowski (Cameron Diaz). But as with all plans that have good intentions they go a little off.
Gambit – Blazing Minds Film Review
Now I have to say I’m a big fan of the Coen brothers, so I’d been looking forward to seeing this one for a while, with its list of some brilliant British actors it had me intrigued from the start.
With its Pink Panther style opening credits, giving you an idea of what the film is about, it had me thinking, “I reckon I’m going to enjoy this”.
Gambit has had some mixed reviews and from I’ve read there are those that hate it and those that really enjoyed the film. Now whether it’s my sense of humor or not, but I found Gambit really funny, with its dry humor in places and its double entendres it just had me in stitches, so much so that I had to try to hold my laughing down not to annoy everyone else.
It must be my adolescent side that just finds it funny when Harry and PJ are talking about the Major and the staff in the Savoy hotel are thinking they are talking about his, dare I say it, willy 😆 Even the scene in the hotel room with guest walking past Harry and didn’t know he was there and breaking wind had me bursting out laughing.
But besides its silliness and its somewhat childish humor in parts Gambit isn’t a bad comedy and let’s face it with all the action movies and horror movies that we have out these days, Gambit is a refreshing change and a good comedy is something we all need to see me and again.
Alan Rickman is really funny with his dry wit and although I did think that he reminded me of the sheriff of Nottingham in a suit, most of the time specially when he’s not in the nude 😆
Ok so Gambit not be the best film of choice for Colin Firth but I think his character was ideally suited for him and it works well.
But Gambit was funny and it certainly brightened up my day and gave my chuckle muscles that little workout that they needed, come on haven’t you ever heard of the healing power of laughter 😉
Overall Thoughts For Gambit
If you love a good British-made comedy with an a-list of British actors and you’d like a laugh, then this is certainly the film for you, go see it, sit back and enjoy.
