The definition of insanity is to do something over and over, expecting different results, yet if there was ever a case where pop-culture has longed to be proved wrong, it is the Fantastic Four adaptations. After years of frustrating movies that were either bland, needlessly edgy, or quite simply; appallingly made, we may finally get the adaptation we’ve been craving.
Jon Watts, Director of Spiderman: Homecoming, Spiderman: Far From Home, and the upcoming third Tom Holland Spidey-flick has been announced as the director, a surprising move that points to Marvel’s growing faith in him. After the success of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the Russo Brothers were brought in for the Avengers-laden sequel: Captain America: Civil War, and then, the Avengers movies themselves. Now, Jon Watts will go from one MCU franchise to another and with such trust being placed in him to translate this pop-culture poison set of misfits to the big-screen, it may not be too many years away from him helming an Avengers instalment himself.
Yet, this isn’t the only team-up movie he’s doing for Marvel. With Alfred Molina and Jamie Foxx announced for the third MCU Spiderman film and the return of Tobey Maguire & Andrew Garfield all but confirmed, Jon Watts is almost certainly being asked to create a Live-Action Spiderverse crossover. So, after tackling such an enormous challenge, he gets the much easier job at trying to turn the Fantastic Four from an infamously bad-series into pure gold, along with the other MCU franchises.
Seems fair. No pressure then.
And to think I thought the webhead had pressures balancing his superhero responsibilities…
