It’s time for a review of a British made horror-comedy today as we check out the new film Paintball Massacre starring Lee Latchford-Evans and directed by Darren Berry.
Old school friends attend a paintball trip miles away from civilisation, all is great, until the last game. All starts to go horribly wrong when it’s clear there is a cold-blooded masked killer on the loose. They try to track back to base camp to call for help, unintentionally getting split up along the way. There are blood, guts, fire and explosions! Will anyone survive?
Despite its slowish start which allows us to build up to us getting know a little bit about the characters as they meet up in the pub before heading off to try and bond together at the Paintball venue which will be become a painful experience and I’m not just talking about the paintballs!
Each character has has their own issues which come across as the paintballing commences and I found it funny that one of the characters seems to have an obsession with the Fast and Furious movies which she brings up in almost every conversation comparing a situation to a moment in the movies.
When the two groups are well into the paintball exercise they discover that one of the groups has been massacred by an unknown killer, could it be one of them or someone playing for kicks.
Now it’s a game of survival as the remaining members try to survive and get away from the killer who is hunting them down one by one in the woodland.
Paintball Massacre isn’t anything new when it comes to the slasher genre, but it does work as a British horror comedy, I think I may have been expecting a little more from the gory side, but saying that the effects used in the film do work very well such as oozing internal organs, gauged eyes and a Samuel L Jackson Deep Blue Sea moment when one of the group is making a rather long speech which you just know is going to go the way he’s not expecting.
The intrigues for the film is wanting to know who is the killer and why they are hunting down the group of paintballers, all is revealed and it was a bit of a surprise.
Paintball Massacre is a well-shot production with the colours nice and crisp, darker scenes are well lit and have good detail, as I mentioned earlier the special effects work well and look good. The film does have that Indiefilm feel and that’s not a bad thing (it was shot on a budget of £100K heart of the English countryside in Somerset), it may put some people off that have a love for all the massive budget made films, but give it a chance, it may not be the best film in the world but it’s not bad.

The film is due for a release in the UK on 5th April on DVD and Digital courtesy of 4Digital Media and you can pre-order it from Amazon now.
