I remember back in 2018 when the first film was released and it blew me away, so now after its several release delays A Quiet Place Part II has finally hit cinemas and last night I was checked the movie out a little early thanks to the Cineworld Unlimited Screening of the film.
Following the events at home, the Abbott family now face the terrors of the outside world. Forced to venture into the unknown, they realize the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats lurking beyond the sand path.
Before I go into this review of the film, I do have to say that if you haven’t seen the first film or it’s been a while since you’ve seen it, it may be a good idea for you to refresh your memory of the phenomenal 2018 film as there are moments in A Quiet Place Part II that tie in nicely with the original film and will give you an insight into some of the moments in this new release.
Unlike most film that go straight into continuing on from where they left off for the sequels A Quiet Place Part II takes us back to “Day 1”, the day that the creatures arrived and life on Earth changed. All is going well with the original cast members enjoying life and watching the their son playing baseball, but suddenly something in the sky grabs their attention, then all hell break out!
The trailer shows the havoc that is happening with some amazing shots of Evelyn Abbot (Emily Blunt) trying to save her children as the creatures start their killing spree, the camera work in this are superb and there is so much to look out for during the sequence, so thank heavens for seeing the film on the big screen.
It’s great that we are taken back to the invasion and see how people cope and how the family that we came to know in the first film had to cope with their quick responses and keeping their wits about them while trying to survive the initial attack, then we jump straight to Day 474, the day that if you’ve seen the first film you will know well, the moment before Evelyn, Regan (Millicent Simmonds), Marcus (Noah Jupe) and the baby set off on a journey to find others to get help.
Back in 2018 I loved A Quiet Place, it was one of those films that just gripped hold of me from start to finish. When the news of Part II was coming out I wasn’t sure that it would top the first film, then when the Covid-19 Pandemic delayed the movie several I thought I would never get to see the film on the big screen, but thankfully we have finally had the release and believe me when I say that A Quiet Place Part II NEEDS to be seen on the big screen.
One of the things that worked so well with the 2018 film was the sound, or the lack of it, with the subtle use of all the speakers to put you at unease, now with Part II the sound is being used brilliantly. Not only is the sound design used to give us a feeling of what Regan is going through without her hearing and those moments of something being there but she can’t hear it, but we have some amazing sound design when it comes to the creatures as they use the click sounds etc that they use to find their prey.
The speakers bounce the sound around to make you feel like something is coming from one side of the screen, is it behind you or just off to the left and hunting you as you watch, very unnerving and that’s the point of the use of sound like that and it damn well works.
Visually the film looks great as well, with those darker scenes still being crisp and full of depth giving you the feeling that something could just be lurking in the shadows ready to pounce.
The story A Quiet Place Part II works very well to continue the journey of the original characters as they try to find safety and to fight the creatures with the method that Regan discovered in the first film, I found myself routing for them all the way throughout the film.
I never thought that A Quiet Place could be topped with a sequel but A Quiet Place Part II has done it, it has the suspence of a thriller to keep you glued and there are several moments that had me on the edge of my seat, there is a moment where the separate parties are fighting for their lives and as we move from one to another I felt myself moving forward in my seat in anticipation of what was going to happen, now this is what a good movie should have you do in moments of danger.
If you enjoyed the first film then this is certainly one you have to see in the cinema, director John Krasinski has returned to the story with a passion and you can see that in the production of A Quiet Place Part II and also shows that the first film was indeed worthy of a superb sequel, could we get third times a charm, maybe. It’s been a long wait for this movie, but the wait has certainly been worth it.
