“All of my Friends” is the standout track from the Pennsylvania folk group Little Wretches. The group centers around the creative mind of Robert Wagner; resident frontman and songwriter. The live rendition of this song is an intimate performance highlighting the clarity of Wagner’s voice, supported by the not so distant fiddles that ebb and flow in and out of sonic focus. The song introduces its primary focus right from the start. You’ll find poignant references to friends, in all walks of life, sewn like a common thread throughout the lyrical structure. Albeit a bit long winded, you’ll find yourself rewinding lines, and catching the nuances time and again as you absorb what Wagner is saying.
Juxtaposition is used throughout to highlight the duality of friendship. Moments of hopelessness met with courage. Or the ordinary poised with the extraordinary. All of it is on a pedestal for the listener.
I think “All of my Friends” is a life story. We begin with themes of greatness. Nothing but time and energy with nowhere to spend it. We meander through the days, trying to make sense of our circumstances. Some people hurt us, some change us. But in the end, we’re all the same. And that realization is what brought us together in the first place.
What I love about the song most, is that it doesn’t try to be something it’s not. Much like Wagner’s aforementioned friends, it’s homegrown, it’s PA, it’s pit bulls & poker machines, it’s effortlessly and endlessly local. This is what gives it the charm to keep you coming back. My favourite aspect of this project might just be the cover art. Its simplicity is welcome. It’s charm, almost liminal. It’s not trying to be something that it’s not. And we thank you for it.
