A while back we brought you a review of the brilliant novel by Samantha Lee Howe titled The Stranger in Our Bed, back then we mentioned that it was being adapted into a feature film and more recently we brought you the news of the first look trailer, some stills from the release and the poster of the film.
Today we bring you a review of the adaptation of The Stranger in Our Bed which is being released on Digital from the 5th of September and is directed by Giles Alderson, the story has been described as Britain’s answer to Gone Girl.
Feeling trapped in her controlling marriage to wealthy husband Tom (Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Industry, Sanditon), Charlotte Carlisle (Emily Berrington, Humans) begins an affair with another man, who one day mysteriously disappears without a trace. Behind her husband’s back, she secretly begins an investigation into the disappearance, teaming up with her lover’s sister Becki (Terri Dwyer, Hollyoaks) to uncover the truth behind what happened.
The Stranger in Our Bed is a very British film that is wonderful to see in this day and age of brash blockbusters with all their overdone CGI and action sequences, this movie is one that, very much like the book, keeps you on your toes from start to finish with a couple of curve balls thrown in to keep you guessing.
The movie is a great thriller that has you second-guessing the characters as Charlotte (Emily Berrington) and Becki (Terri Dwyer) try to discover the truth of what has happened to Ewan (Bart Edwards). I found myself getting pulled in deeper as the story unfolds and hidden truths are revealed for several of the characters.
Giles Alderson has done a great job bringing the story to the screen in this adaptation, the cast plays their parts well as the twists and turns of the story unfold, The Stranger in Our Bed also looks good with the cinematography by Richard Swingle.
The cast certainly brings Samatha Lee Howe’s book to life on the screen, as they play their part very well and it was a lovely surprise to see Joseph Marcell who many will recognise as Geoffrey from The Fresh Prince of Bell-Air in the adaptation as Stefan, also Samantha in a cameo during the early part of the film, you may have spotted her in the trailer as well.
This is a movie that may not be for everyone, but if you’ve read the book then you are going to love this adaptation, even if you haven’t read it then the movie is one that is interesting enough to keep you glued throughout the production. It’s great to see films like The Stanger in Our Bed coming along to screens.
There are so many amazing stories in the world that are waiting to be adapted to the screens and Samath’s book is one that I’m so glad has been made into a film, I hope that more of Samantha’s books will make their way to the cinema screens, you just never know fingers crossed.
