It’s time for another low-budget indie movie review as a deadly plague has come from above in the new film Alien Outbreak.
What could happen in a quiet rural English town, two police officers begin their normal shift but soon realise something is wrong. With residents behaving strangely and horrific events unfolding before their eyes, they learn they are under attack from terrifying alien creatures and must fight to defend their town and community.
First of all, I have to mention that Alien Outbreak looks good and I mean that with the colouring of the film, the colour pallet works very well in many scenes and it looks crisp, the use of lighting is also nicely used, particularly at night with the various shadow, colours and effects for the torch-lit corridors, look out for a nicely shot scene while they are driving in a car and the burnt orange background stands out perfectly in the scene.
Now that’s out of the way, let’s get on to the film itself, many people give indie made films a rough ride these days, but this is probably down to them comparing them with big Hollywood blockbusters, these types of movies like Alien Outbreak always have a certain look and feel to them and to me I find that very appealing in the extravagant blockbusters.
But one thing that stands out with this movie is its CGI effects, I’ve seen some really dodgy effects over the years where someone hasn’t grasped the technology to make it look good, but Alien Outbreak has some really nifty CGI that looks good.
The alien crafts look great, they look like they have been through some crap and don’t look sparkly clean giving them that battle-ready look as they arrive on Earth to take over the planet.
The film starts with our introduction to Katherine Drake’s character Sgt Zoe Norris as people in the village are starting to go crazy and causing them to commit suicide, all very strange and probably not your usual alien style invasion.
Like any alien invasion movie the tension is certainly there with Alien Outbreak, it can be slow at times but it kept my attention for the 85 mins running time, I think that’s down to I just wanted to see if the characters survived the Alien attack or not!
I did find a certain part of the film towards the film very unnerving and shocking, it did have me cringing slightly, but that’s all I’m going to say, for now, don’t want to give you any spoilers, suffice to say karma is a…
Don’t expect Independence Day or War of the Worlds with Alien Outbreak, but enjoy the knowledge that this is a film that has been made on a budget and that the team have put together a movie that they have enjoyed making in pure indie style. I did like the subtle twist at the end of the movie though, wasn’t expecting that!
