It’s a movie I’d been waiting to see since Netflix starting teasing us with the trailer, so last night I sat down to watch the almost two and half hours of Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead!
Following a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantine zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted, but can they pull it off while fighting off the Army of the Dead!
I have to say that after the introduction in the film on how the zombies first took over Las Vegas I absolutely loved the opening credits with the slow-motion action, amazing soundtrack and the pink lettering that really stood out on the screen, the style of the opening reminded me of a video game which is no bad thing as it certainly got me intrigued on how the film would play out through the two and half hours.
We then come to meet Scott Ward (Dave Bautista) after the fight out of Las Vegas who is now working in a burger joint, as he is flipping burgers Bly Tanaka (Hiroyuki Sanada) asks to speak to him and give him the chance to make $50M by breaking into a casino that is in the heart of the now zombie-infested Las Vegas, it’s up to Ward to get a team together and to split the money between them however he wants.
Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead is one heck of a crazy movie once it gets into Las Vegas, there is plenty of exploding heads and blood going everywhere in some great action set pieces, these zombies aren’t the slow movies type either they really move fast and they are sentient which makes the trip in and out of Las Vegas even riskier.
Although the story is a simple one, break into a vault and steal the millions and get out, it has some subtle twists that make it work well, although the acting may not be the best in the Army of the Dead you find you ignore that and just enjoy it for the action, zombies and the gore factor that comes with the heist.
There were several things that really stood out for me while watching the film on Netflix, one was the brilliant use of the music throughout that really made it sound great and the other was the use of depth of field when it came to the cinematography, the sets look great but Zack Snyder’s use of blowing out the backgrounds and keeping the main cast in focus looks stunning and that, along with the colour pallet, is what gives it that high-end video game look.
Let’s also not forget that Zombie Tiger that seems to be trending on social media at the moment and it looks amazing on a 4K TV, the CGI is probably one of the best CGI moments in the film. But I would loved to have seen much more than the few scenes that it is in, but the last scene it is in is one of those punch the air moments.
There are some great lines in the movie that had me laughing out loud and I have to admit that there are some Zombie mashing moments that had me laughing as well, ok that may be a little wrong but hey they are zombies at the end of the day.
Army of the Dead probably isn’t going to be for everyone, there will be those that hate everything that Zack Snyder does and those that love everything as well, but for me, I really enjoyed the sheer craziness of the film, the idea of taking the story of a heist and mixing in the zombies in the area that the vault is located is a great idea.
If you have Netflix and a few hours to spare then check out Army of the Dead, anyone who likes zombies and particular ones that movie, as they did in World War Z, will probably enjoy the film, as I mentioned earlier it’s crazy & fun and that’s something we need these days to bring a smile to our faces.
