AVATAR IMAX 3D Review, We Returned To Pandora for an IMAX Experience

It’s been 12 years since I last saw AVATAR on the big screen and with the new upcoming sequel on the way, I got the chance to check out the groundbreaking movie again but this time a chance to step into the world of Pandora with AVATAR IMAX 3D!

Back in 2009 Avatar was THE movie to see on the big screen and its ground-breaking technology certainly set the mark for movies in 3D even now after 12 years the movie is still one of the best movies to see in 3D and now that the movie has been re-issued in cinemas in IMAX 3D and a 4K restoration it looks better than ever.

Most of us have seen Avatar over the years either when it was originally released or on DVD, Blu-ray and on TV, the story of a Jake, who is a paraplegic, who replaces his twin brother on the Na’vi inhabited Pandora for a corporate mission, but as with any good Sci-Fi movie, not everything is smooth running, but after the natives accept him as one of their own, he must decide where his loyalties lie.

With such a brilliant cast, this is a movie that has always been one that I have enjoyed including the extended edition, the 2h 42m runtime flew by during yesterday’s screening, which still goes to show that the film is great to watch.

Did you know the runtime was the maximum amount of film that could physically fit onto an IMAX film platter?

When AVATAR was originally released in IMAX, the film was formatted to ensure an optimal viewing experience for IMAX audiences, this was my first time seeing the movie in the IMAX format and I have to say that the picture quality is superb, it’s so crisp, colourful and so wonderful to see on the huge screen, but it’s not only the screen that looks great the Avatar IMAX 3D release comes with IMAX sound that booms through the cinema’s system and even has the ability to pick out those subtle sounds, such as the sounds of crackling fires and small insects buzzing around the surround system which brings you closer to being on Pandora.

Avatar IMAX 3D certainly has some amazing depth, when the movie first came out I saw the movie in various formats including 2D and the short-lived active 3D, but I have to say that the IMAX 3D release of the movie looks so much better and the 3D really pops with its depth, you really get to feel that you are part of the film as the IMAX 3D really takes you into that 3rd dimension. Look out for the embers floating down the screen, you can almost feel that you can reach out and grab them.

The movie is the highest-grossing movie to ever grace an IMAX screen despite having approximately 300 cinemas worldwide in 2009 compared to over 1,500 cinemas today.
