Vertigo Releasing has recently released a new movie from the makers of Hunt for the Wilderpeople and The Breaker Upperers, we check out Baby Done.
The movie is produced by Morgan Waru, and executive produced by Oscar-winner Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor Ragnarok, Hunt for the Wilderpeople) and Carthew Neal (Jojo Rabbit, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Tickled), BABY DONE is the latest New Zealand comedy smash to be hitting the UK and Irish shores.

Starring award-winning comedian Rose Matafeo (Horndog, The Breaker Upperers, Funny Girls) and Matthew Lewis (Harry Potter, Me Before You), the film follows wannabe-adventurer Zoe (Matafeo) who freaks out when she becomes pregnant. Her long-term boyfriend Tim (Lewis) embraces the prospect of fatherhood, but Zoe attempts to rush through her dreams before the baby arrives.
Baby Done a Baby-Rom-Com
I’ve been watching a fair amount of movies coming from New Zealand lately and I have to say that I’m finding them great viewing and Baby Done is no exception, this Baby-Rom-Com is a film that had me laughing out loud at the journey that Zoe (Matafeo) takes for the nine months after finding out she is pregnant.

The movie shows how having a baby can change your life in so many ways, Zoe loves adventure and she has to try to take a step back from the tree climbing, bungee jumping and other activities that she loves, her boyfriend Tim (Lewis) is brilliant as he tries to keep her grounded with some great lines that bounce off Zoe, look out for the scene with the cherry picker and Zoe up a tree, brilliant.

There is some very laugh out moments in the movie and there are also some rather cringe moments that you actually find yourself laughing out loud at as well when you really shouldn’t such as Zoe, Tim and Zoe’s best friend about to have threesome until Zoe’s belly is seen which results in a moment of clarity for Zoe and Tim. Then there’s the Pregophile but we won’t go into that, I’ll leave that for you to see when you watch the movie.
Baby Done is beautifully written by Sophie Henderson (Human Traces, Fantail) and you feel for the characters of Zoe and Tim as well as the lovely set pieces of comedy that are throughout the movie, Henderson’s husband Curtis Vowell (Fantail) has done a great job directing the semi-autobiographical story inspired by their own reaction to starting a family.
BABY DONE is out now on Digital.
