The 6th feature film by Raya Films, written and directed by former Canvey Island resident, James Smith, surpassed its latest Indiegogo campaign in 48 hours from launch and is now on track for an October shoot in and around Southend-on-Sea.
With most of the cast in place and pre-production well underway, Best Geezer has been setting social media alight and gaining attention from crowdfunding backers, sponsors and press and media.
“We are all totally amazed that we hit our fundraising goal in such a short amount of time,” says producer/screenwriter, Caroline Spence, who has been heading the campaign. “You often see big gory horror films smashing their campaigns and gaining big bucks, but we never would have believed our little movie would now be trending on the front page of Indiegogo alongside these behemoths!”

Although the crowdfunding goal has been reached, a new ‘stretch goal’ has been set in order to raise more funds for the project. The more the team can raise, the more expenses they can cover, such as travel, locations, props, wardrobe, make-up and catering.
There are some unique perks and opportunities on offer through the campaign, as well as a chance to pick up some rewards at a reduced Early Bird rate. For example, backers can opt to appear as an extra onscreen, as well as having a mini-photo shoot and receiving professional still photographs, all for only £75.
Other perks range from as little as £5 for a social media shout out, £25 for promotion of a show reel, business or event, and on up to £250 for Associate Producer credits, or £1000 to become an Elite Executive Producer with invites to red carpet screening events and an onscreen cameo.
Best Geezer follows the story of three hapless entrepreneurs who join forces to make a geezer movie. It’s described as The Full Monty meets Silver Linings Playbook, and splashed liberally with Only Fools And Horses, set in Southend, with plentiful music and dance.
“I’m really looking forward to spending more time in Southend and working on Best Geezer,” James explains. “The humour and sharp wit in this part of the country is unique, and I know this is going to be a cracking film. I can’t wait to start rolling cameras on it!”
