It was movie night the other night and so it was a chance to see the much talked about The Big Short over at the Scala Cinema Prestatyn, I have to admit that I wasn’t totally sure on what to expect from the movie, but isn’t that part of the fun sometimes.
The Big Short tells the story of four guys that notice something that the big banks, media and government refused to see, the global collapse of the economy. They had an idea: The Big Short. But along with their bold investment, they are taken in to the dark underbelly of modern banking where they must question everyone and everything.
First of all, let’s just say that just because The Big Short is about banking, it’s not a boring film, yes it may get a little complicated when they are talking about CDO’s and Triple A Bonds etc. But with the help of some special guests throughout the movie, the banking jargon is explained in a way that a lot of us can easily understand, well sort of.
But among the mystery that is banking and mortgages, the film runs along nicely as the time-frame moved closer and closer to that day that many of us will remember when the markets crashed!
With its light-hearted look via some great one-liners from the cast and some interesting moments when the “fourth wall” is broken to explain certain moments in the film and what really happened at the time, The Big Short is not only an interesting and intriguing movie, but also one that had myself and many other cinema goers on the evening laughing out loudly.
Steve Carell is superb as Mark Baum with his conscience starting to take over when he realises what is going to happen when the proverbial you know what hits the fan, Christian Bale is great as Michael Burry, although I just couldn’t help myself from looking at his eye during his scenes, specially after his character mentioned that he has glass eye!
Director Adam McKay (Anchorman 1 & 2, Step Brothers) has certainly pulled in some great actors for the roles in The Big Short, it’s still a comedy (of sorts) with its dry humour and many expletives that run throughout, but it all works.
The Big Short is probably not an all out laugh fest that you may be expecting it to be with the likes of Steve Carell and directed by the guy that brought is so many comedies, but it is a film that is going to be one that many will be talking about for a while.

With the movie also being nominated for 5 Oscars, it’s going to be interesting to see how it does on awards night.
