We recently headed out to check out the latest in the MCU movie with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in IMAX at Cineworld Broughton for our latest IMAX movie review.
Back in 2018, we had the first Black Panther movie and it was a character that I was looking forward to seeing in their own movie, a sequel was inevitable but sadly in 2020, Chadwick Boseman died and so many thought that the sequel wouldn’t happen.
Thankfully the new movie did happen and it has such a lovely moment of saying farewell to such a superb actor as the movie starts with Shuri (Letitia Wright) fighting to create a cure for T’Challa’s (Boseman) incurable disease, but sadly she isn’t able to save his life and we are brought a very moving funeral of T’Challa that is also a goodbye to Chadwick Boseman.
We then jump forward a year, Wakanda is feeling the force of not having a Black Panther and many countries are trying to get their hands on Wakanda’s Vibranium which is thought to only exist in Wakanda, but there has been some more found at the bottom of the ocean and along with this a discovery of a race of underwater sea dwellers of the city Talokan lead by Namor AKA Sub-Mariner (Tenoch Huerta MejÃa).
A war is about to take place between Wakanda and Talokan, without a Black Panther this could be a battle to the bitter end of Wakanda!
Now I have to say that I wasn’t sure if the movie would work without Boseman, but it does. The returning cast of Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett and Martin Freeman certainly give the movie the feeling that I got with the first Black Panther movie.
The action sequences look and sound fantastic and when you add the IMAX sequences that open 26% more of the screen, the underwater scenes really make you feel like you are under the water in the murky depths of the ocean and in the city of Talokan.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is another great Marvel movie to watch on the big screen and the bigger the better, being a fan of IMAX it’s great to see a movie make the most of the format to take the viewer into the movie.
Yes, there will be comparisons with the Talokans being Blue when they are out of the water and some folk shouting Avatar! But this really didn’t distract me from the look and feel of the movie, I found myself welling up as the Marvel Studios logo appeared at the start of the film as all the images were of Chadwick Boseman, then with the funeral, it hit home even more.
If like me you have seen all the Marvel movies on the big screen, then don’t miss your chance to see this one in IMAX to enjoy that expanded aspect ratio.
As with all Marvel movies, there is also an extra scene or two in the end credits, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever features only one extra scene, so once you have seen it you won’t have to sit through the rest of the credits unless you want to.
