It’s hard to believe that it 30 years since the release of Bram Stoker’s Dracula on cinema screens, but now thanks to Park Circus, director Francis Ford Coppola‘s visually stunning, passionately seductive version of the classic Dracula legend has been remastered and returned to the big screen to celebrate its 30th anniversary.
The movie starring Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins and Keanu Reeves is one that fans have loved over the years, with Oldman’s fantastic performance of Dracula from decaying creepy castle dweller to the seductive prince that melts the hearts of all the women that he comes across and particular Ryder’s character.
Most of us know the story of Dracula and over the years there have been so many movies made based on Bram Stoker’s story, but for me, this version has always been one that keeps me coming back for more, so to have the chance to re-watch the movie on the big screen again was a chance I didn’t want to miss, especially with it being a 4K remastered release.
One of the many things that always stood out with Francis Ford Coppola‘s version of the Bram Stoker classic is the visuals throughout the film, such as Dracula’s eyes peering through the clouds at Harker (Reeves) as he travels to the castle in the mountains. It’s a scene that looks good on the small screen but when you see it on a huge cinema screen in 4K it certainly grabs your attention of the creepiness that is awaiting Harker upon his arrival.
Throughout Bram Stoker’s Dracula the visuals look fantastic in the new 4K restoration, yes there are those slight moments of grain but this is down to the movie being shot on film and the restoration team has done a great job of bringing the movie back to life, the colours look great and darker scenes work very well with the shades still having enough definition to make things still appear in the distance.
Seeing the movie on the big screen at a cinema also brings the sound to your attention so much more, for those that may have only seen the movie on the small screen will remember the conversation early on with Dracula (Oldman) and Harker (Reeves) having a slight echo of sorts, the cinema sound system picks up on this and the echoes and screams are more prominent but not too much to distract you from the scene but enough to send a chill down the back of your neck as the sounds emanate from around you.
Wojciech Kila’s soundtrack also sounds wonderful in the cinema, it’s something that adds so much more to the movie and is a pure delight to listen to on the powerful cinema system, yes it sounds good on a home cinema sound system, but it’s hearing it at the cinema that really brings out the power that it brings to many of the scenes.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula has always been one of my favourite vampire movies, the cast is great with Anthony Hopkins playing two parts including the vampire hunter himself Van Helsing, the comic moments still had many laughing at the cinema during the screening which is great to see, Keanu Reeves still takes a little getting used to as Jonathon Harker, Winona Ryder players her two parts well, but it’s Gary Oldman that steals the screentime with his portrayal as Dracula, a joy to watch even now after the movie was first released back in 1992 (damn that still makes me feel old).
It’s been great seeing this classic horror back on the big screen at Cineworld thanks to Park Circus Films, next up for another 4K restoration is the 35th anniversary of The Lost Boys on the 17th of October so look out for my review of that.
