We’ve kicked off the reviews and visits to Cineworld this week with the Unlimited Screening of Champions starring Woody Harrelson and Kaitlin Olson.
A former minor-league basketball coach is ordered by the court to manage a team of players with intellectual disabilities. He soon realizes that despite his doubts, together, this team can go further than they ever imagined.
Over the last few visits to Cineworld, we’ve been teased with the trailer for the new movie and I was so glad to hear that we would be getting the chance to see Champions a little early with an Unlimited Screening.
The new movie is based on the Spanish movie ‘Campeones’, sadly I’ve not seen that so I can’t give a comparison at the moment, but I have to say that this adaptation was a delight to see on the big screen, I really wasn’t expecting the number of laughs that Champions delivers from start to finish and how charming the story would be.
I was pleasantly surprised by Woody Harrelson‘s performance in this new movie and with some great writing to bring the movie to the big screen, this was a movie that had the majority of the audience laughing lots of times throughout the screening.
There are some brilliant lines in the movie and although Harrelson has a few of them the stars of the movie are the basketball team “Friends” which really stole the movie for me, Johnny (Kevin Iannucci) is a scene stealer as he comes out of his shell more as he bonds with Marcus (Harrelson), while Marcus is also “connecting” with his sister Alex (Kaitlin Olson).
When the team need a replacement player, they call upon Cosentino (Madison Tevlin) who is so much fun to watch and she has some brilliant lines that put the boys in the team in their place, and the coach. You’ll get the idea from the trailer.
As I mentioned earlier Champions is packed with laughs, some great writing and cast, it also comes with a brilliant soundtrack that will have you tapping your feet while the tracks boom out, who can resist singing along to Tubthumping and Unbelievable?
Director Bobby Farrelly has done a great job putting the movie together with all the elements that make Champions a very entertaining movie, those heartwarming moments that flow into comedy and more work for the entire duration of the movie.
It’s great to see Ernie Hudson in the movie and for the fans of Trailer Park Boys, see if you can spot Mike Smith (Bubbles) in a small role.
If you want to escape the world for a couple of hours and give those chuckle muscles a good workout then check out Champions when it opens in UK cinemas on March the 10th 2023.
